He was woken by the voices drifting up from downstairs. Marshal rolled onto his side, automatically reaching for the other side of the bed. Nick’s side of the bed, but it was empty. That made him open his eyes. Nick wasn’t in the bed, wasn’t even in the room. Marshal sat up and listened to the voices carefully. While he couldn’t hear enough to follow the conversation, he picked up enough to know Nick was downstairs and was fine, presumably with his friends. Yawning and rubbing his neck, he left the bed and padded to the bathroom. His backpack was still sitting where he’d dumped it last night. He pulled clean jeans out, but once he had them on, he hesitated. On the other side of the bed was Nick’s dresser. Marshal pursed his lips, weighing his choices. He sidestepped the bed and opened the topmost drawer. Neatly folded shirts sat arranged in rows. He ran his fingers over Nick’s clothes, then took one out.

He and Nick were approximately the same size, though Marshal was somewhat wider in the shoulders. The shirt fit him like a glove, emphasizing his muscular build. He closed the drawer and left the room. Once he was on the stairs, his phone rang. There was a telltale pause in the conversation from downstairs.

“Ryan,” he said absently.

“Good to hear you,” his friend said. “I was starting to worry.”

He snorted. “You don’t have to.”

“How did it go?”

Marshal hesitated, finally settling for “Good enough for now.”

The alpha exhaled loudly. “That’s something at least. Should I send the rest of your things over?”

Pausing at the bottom of the stairs, Marshal met Nick’s gaze. Heat flared in his blue eyes as he saw what Marshal was wearing. His lips curled in a smile.

“Yes,” he said, not taking his eyes off Nick. “As soon as you can.” He closed the phone.

“You’re up,” he said to Nick.

“I am,” Nick acknowledged. “I see you are dressed.”

Marshal’s smile widened, excitement dancing under his skin. “What, you don’t approve?”

“I didn’t say that.”

Marshal smirked. “Are you going to introduce me?” He jerked his head toward the two men who were watching their exchange.

“Allen. Marcus. This is Marshal.”

They had to recognize the name, but neither of them so much as blinked at the introduction, rising in his estimation. Those two were better than Seamus and Neal. Marshal studied them curiously. Allen and Nick were standing next to each other, like they were caught in the middle of a conversation when Marshal showed up. Marcus was sprawled insolently on the couch, apparently at ease in his future alpha’s house. If he wasn’t mistaken, both were of middle level strength, but he saw the way Marcus’s eyes took in every nuance of his appearance, drawing the correct conclusion.

“Seamus said you were here,” Marcus drawled.

He would bet anything Marcus at least had been watching their confrontation.

“Did he?” he inquired blandly. “He say anything else?”

“Nothing important. It was Seamus.”

“Did I interrupt something?” Marshal addressed Nick.

“No. Allen is here for me.
