Chapter Twenty Two
The opening of Dawning had come and gone without any major issues occurring, and the café had been open to the public for two weeks. Sarah couldnât have asked for a smoother opening day. It had been bitterly cold and people had been keen to come in out of the weather and take their time over a hot drink and a bite to eat.
Dawning had been decorated with festive Christmas garb a few days after its opening, much to the delight of Marg. Marg, the barista Sarah had chosen to hire, had tried to convince her to do it for opening day, but Sarah had been firm that sheâd wanted people to see Dawning as it truly was when they first opened their doors. Still, the twinkling fairy lights and red and green tinsel that now adorned the walls of Dawning gave the café a certain extra sense of charm. Children and adults alike had particularly liked the large glass bowl full of mini candy canes that had been placed on the counter for them to help themselves to. Bringing Christmas to Dawning had seemingly been a hit with customers and staff alike and had given Sarah a high that she hadnât expected.
The day the decorations had been revealed Betty had spoken to Sarah in a hushed whisper admitting to her that when it had seemed like she wasnât going to put up any Christmas decorations in Dawning that Betty had been afraid Sarah was âone of those people that didnât celebrate Christmasâ. Sarah had been shocked at Bettyâs small mindedness in considering people that choose not to celebrate Christmas as being âthose peopleâ, as if they were inferior to people who did celebrate the holiday. Sarah had reminded Betty in no uncertain terms that everyone was entitled to their own personal beliefs and that Sarah herself personally considered Christmas to be a holiday that was vastly over-commercialised.
Betty hadnât quite known what to say and had soon afterwards left the café noticeably upset. Sarah, feeling badly about being so blunt with Betty had gone to visit her the same evening at the bed and breakfast to apologise, the two making up over a cup of tea.
Now as she sat at a table in the pub with her friends enjoying a glass of wine she smiled at the scene before her. The pub had been dressed in Christmas decorations, just like she had done at the café, but Clive had taken it several steps further than she had had done. In one corner a large Christmas tree stood proudly twinkling with coloured lights and baubles while a handful of rather gaudy plastic Santa Claus faces adorned the walls. As tacky as the Santa faces appeared they somehow seemed to add to the atmosphere rather than detracting from it.
âIâm not doing it again, Becca. Not happening. No way.â Camâs voice interrupted her reverie.
Sarahâs friends had dropped into the café an hour before closing for a hot drink as well as
