The next night, Penny pinned her last curl in place just as her doorbell rang. Her stomach flip-flopped. East had called earlier today. He had an evening cancelation so heâd asked to squeeze in a late night date. The past two days had shoved hesitation into what should have been an easy yes response. But she owed it to herself to pursue this relationship. To prove that a man like East would pursue her. So sheâd donned her black wrap dress, tamed her hair, and perfected her makeup.
The doorbell rang again as she hustled down the hall, snagging on her turquoise flats. She managed to open the door before the third ring.
âI was starting to worry you werenât home.â East stood on her front step, every blond hair in place. His dark green shirt pulled against his chest, and a pair of perfectly worn jeans hung off his hips while the full wattage of his smile aimed directly at her.
She returned it. âSpin class got out late. It put me behind. Sorry.â
âDonât apologize. You look great.â His eyes traveled along the scooped neckline of her dress, past her waist, to her bare legs and back up again.
Penny turned to grab her purse off the small table by her door before he caught the blush on her cheeks. Sheâd known this dress showed off her new curves.
âYou hungry?â East moved back as she stepped out and turned to lock the door.
âStarved.â
His lips brushed the back of her neck. âSo am I.â
Penny swiveled, and he winked. âFor dinner, of course.â
He grabbed her hand on the way to his car, his thumb stroking her wrist. They reached his silver Mazda Miata, and he let go, rounded the car, and slipped into the driverâs side. Penny slid into the passengerâs seat.
East glanced at her as he pulled into traffic. âYou did spin again today?â
âYeah. I really like it.â
âHow are your legs?â
âFine. Definitely better than after yesterdayâs class.â
He flipped on the stereo. Hard rock beat the air. âYeah. Sorry about that. I didnât realize the class was advanced.â He tapped his steering wheel. âAdam said you handled it well. He also said Jonah was there helping you.â
Was he jealous? âI wouldnât have been able to make it through the class without him.â
âGlad he was there then.â He merged onto 90 East, giving her leg a little squeeze. âI donât have anything to be worried about, do I?â
âWeâre just friends. Like Iâve said before.â
âI donât get that vibe from Jonah.â
âWell, we are, so no worries.â But did this mean he wanted to be exclusive? She was so not good at this.
East checked his blind spot before merging into the left lane. âGlad to hear it. I was worried I might have some competition.â Then he laughed.
She must have missed the joke. And she didnât want to be the butt of one, so sheâd shelve her relationship questions until later. âSo where are we going?â
âYou like heights?â
âRoof at Wit?â
âYou got it.â
She glanced at her watch. Seven. Even on a Wednesday, it would be hard getting in at this time.
