Star Chart 3.25NGC 5823, NGC 5315 and ESO 97-G13

One lone planetary nebula is available for keen observers, NGC 5315. In small telescopes this will only appear as a 10th magnitude star, albeit a bluish-green one. With a larger telescope and high magnification, the disc will be seen as an object about 6 arcseconds across. The central star has a magnitude of 11.2. To aid in locating the nebula, there is a pale yellow star some 4 arcseconds to the west.

Our final object should come as a surprise. Considering that the constellation is buried deep in the Milky Way, it is something of a pleasant revelation that we can see another galaxy. ESO 97-G13 was discovered as recently as 1977. It is also known as the Circinus Galaxy and is a spiral galaxy located only some 4° from the galactic plane (see Fig. 3.30). This would imply that there must be some sort of gap in the usual obscuring gas and dust in order for the galaxy to be seen.
