CHAPTER 30

Gage slammed his fist down on the heavy wooden desk, rattling ink bottles and quills. He cursed again as he re-read the name just to be certain. Ruy Cernunnos, the head of House Cernunnos and its current Archmage.

He had worked for Ruy and House Cernunnos as their master of assassins, on loan from the Shadowed Fist. He'd killed dozens of rival mages for the man and been privy to nearly all their secrets.

The Archmage hadn't been happy when he'd retired. He hadn't been happy that he was leaving the Shadowed Fist and would no longer be bound by its code of secrecy. He'd been afraid Gage would sell the information he knew. In the end, only a personal meeting with Aeg Derg had convinced him Gage would not be a threat.

The Shadowed Fist enforced its code of silence, even if someone left the guild. No one revealed details of jobs or secrets they learned when contracted out to a client. If they did, the guild would silence them—permanently.

Gage swore again. Was that why Ruy had come after him? It made no sense. Any secrets he would know would be years old. Why wait so long to come after him? Or was there another reason? Could it be something personal? But why? What had been so important that his family had to die?!

He read the entry in the ledger again.
