Chapter 15
Monday the 9th of September, 2002 - Westmeath, Ontario

here was a creak from the hallway. Jason ignored it, telling himself it was just the house settling; it always made a lot of noise when the weather was getting cold. He looked out the window and saw the bright sunshine; it wasnât turning cold. He felt her warmth under him, and his skin tingled from her touch. Things were so easy with her. Were they too easy? he wondered. Shouldnât there be more conflict?
âWell, weâve got a whole box to get through.â Another creak, closer this time. He barely felt her fingernails down his back. âWe should definitely make a valiant effort.â
The board just inside the door creaked, and he jumped out of bed to run forward to meet the three attackers.
Ah, thereâs the conflict.
He didnât recognize them; they werenât identical to the previous ones, but they did a great job at being unremarkable. What was memorable was their knives.
The first came at him with a supernaturally fast lunge. The knife would have pierced his heart, if Jason hadnât moved sideways just enough to avoid the blade. His left arm reached out and grabbed the manâs wrist. âThis is my home,â he growled.
A tug of the arm and a hard jab broke the manâs nose, blood gushing from it. Jason punched him twice more in the ribs. He fell back and landed on the floor, hate in his eyes as he was teleported.
Damn, Jason thought, I could have used that knife.
Risking a glance at Kennedy, he saw her attacker on the ground about to get up, and a knife on the bed on top of his favourite pillow, which now looked like it had been through a food processor.
He grabbed the knife and barely parried the second attacker. He needed to end this quickly so he could finish the third man.
He switched to a reverse hold on the knife and watched the man, who held his knife in front of him with his body sideways to avoid making an easy target. The assassins were good. The two attacked then defended back and forth. Jason saw that the man, and all the attackers so far, relied on reach and their weapon.
The room wasnât huge and Jason preferred close combat, which meant that they were in his element, and even without his powers, he had the advantage.
As a fighter, Jason had always thought serrated knives were a ridiculous idea. They did massive damage going in but they also gave another weapon something to catch on. He switched his grip to something more like a fencer, with the serrated edge toward his attacker.
The man sneered, doing the same thing. If they hit each other, it would tear and rip skin in a way that would bleed profusely and hurt like hell. He wished he could make a shield out of shadow to protect himself. Fighting naked wasnât a lot of fun.
The man lunged and Jason caught the blade with his, the serrated edges
