Chapter 15
One thing I have to say for my father, he recovered fast.
I was the only one outside Kier who saw his eyes widen. I think there was even a touch of fear in them. Then, in the next second, he wiped all emotion from his face and pulled on his happy mask.
âJillian! I didnât realize you were going to be here! How do you know everyone at this table?â he asked, suspicion coloring his voice. He turned back to the woman. âXanthe Missature. It is a pleasure to meet you! I have been trying to reach you, but your office is excellent at isolating you from the public.â
Yep. Anger was smoldering there. I twisted my face away so he wouldnât see the smile that I was afraid had appeared on my face. Glancing up into Jackâs muddy green eyes, I found he wasn't any help. He was holding back his laughter as well.
Lucky for both of us, a server materialized beside at our table and asked for our drink order. Figuring I needed to keep my wits tonight, I ordered a Merlot. Jack joined me and the man moved around the table, walking around my father, who kept a tight grip on my mother.
I glanced at her. She was gazing at me, but it still looked like nothing was alive in her face except her eyes.
What are you thinking, Mommie Dearest? Did you condemn me or save me by kicking me out of the house?
I looked over at the rest of his party. Matthew had done what a proper little intern should have done and had led the rest of them to their table, arranging them into their seats as he should. He remained standing, his hand on his dateâs shoulder, watching over his boss.
âI didnât take your calls because I have nothing to say to you, Senator. If I want to support your campaign, I will. Otherwise, I wonât.â
This woman was the CEO. The Executive. The one in charge. She understood exactly who she was, what she was worth, and what the person in front of her wanted.
My father wasnât used to people like her. Exhibit A: my mother. I suspected he didnât like women like Xanthe, but he must have needed her for something.
He froze, silent for once.
Kier waved a hand. âNo worries, Senator. Xanthe and Robert will be at your little party, along with Marissa and Janey. Have you met them?â
My mother flinched. Well, if Father didnât recognize them, she did.
âDear, that is Jane Lindown Torreson. The UK Prime Ministerâs daughter. Ms. Torreson, what a pleasure it is to meet you.â She then turned and looked at the other woman. âAnd the other young lady I surmise is the heir to Sunset Cruises.â
Well, this is the first time I had seen Motherâs worth to my father. I realized why he hadnât cast her off yet. Mother was his memoryâpeople, places and things.
They must have done this many times before, because Father pasted on a smile just for the two influential women.
