Steven is a nineteen-year-old man dating a âvery matureâ twenty-one-year-old woman. His girlfriend keeps easing away from a committed relationship, however, and tells him she keeps dreaming about a âfaceless man.â Steven wants to know: Is the faceless man a sign to move on? Is his girlfriend trying to âdrop a hintâ?
Faceless people appear in our dreams in two contexts: when we are avoiding painful awarenesses (including memories) in our lives, or when we are uncertain about the future. Because Steven's girlfriend is not chased or attacked in her dreamsâclues that would alert us that disturbing feelings are involvedâher dreams about a faceless man, like Zoe's, instead suggest uncertainty about the future. In response to Steven's pressure to agree to a committed relationship, her dreams about a faceless man do indeed hold symbolic import: Steven's girlfriend is not ready to commit.
