The girls were at the hair salon, getting their colors updated before the dance and Evan had taken advantage of their being under Maggieâs care to go for a long run. There had been a dusting of snow the night before and she knew there wouldnât be many more days she could get out and run before the snow really moved in and it was just too dangerous. Sure, there was a track at the school that was kept cleared and there were treadmills inside a couple of local gyms. For Evan, she found joy in being able to just go wherever her feet took her whether that was the beach or up and down Main Street in town. It helped that the main road through town was only a couple of blocks from the house, so Evan did a ten-mile loop and slowed as she came back through downtown. She paused to stretch on a bench outside the coffee shop, then went inside to get herself a latte as a treat.
âOh my gawd, were you actually running today?â The voice screeched across Evanâs nerves as Sue Ann spoke up from two people behind Evan in line. Since the woman hadnât bothered saying her name, Evan tried to pretend she didnât hear her. She placed her order and tucked her gloves into her jacket pocket as she walked down the counter to wait.
âMaybe you didnât hear me,â Sue Ann said as she walked over to wait near Evan after placing her order. âI asked if youâd been out running.â
âI think everyone in Haven heard you,â Evan replied. âI just didnât care to answer a stupid question.â
âYou should be nicer to me,â Sue Ann said with a sniff and a toss of her bleached blond curls. âMayor Baldwin is a friend of mine.â
âReally? Is he as good a friend as Aaron Shipley?â Evan asked, eyes wide. âBecause Iâm sure Mrs. Baldwin would love to know that, and Emily is a dear friend.â
Sue Annâs eyes narrowed. âYouâre being mean again. You shouldnât be mean to me.â
âOh, fuck off, Sue Ann. This isnât high school. You were a vapid bitch then and youâre even more of one now. Do us both a favor and donât try to speak to me,â Evan said as she accepted her cup and turned to leave.
A couple of older women seated at a table started to applaud as Evanâs words rang out in the coffee shop. Apparently, she wasnât the only one fed up with Sue Annâs bullshit.
Sue Annâs face turned bright red. She grabbed her own cup and stormed out of the shop so fast the door banged against the wall.
âSorry, folks. I guess my âinside voiceâ wasnât very quiet,â Evan said with a wry grin.
âHoney, you only said what the rest of us were thinking. You have a good day, now,â one of the women that had applauded said.
Evan gave her a jaunty salute, then headed out of the shop. She sipped her latte, smiled, then started the short walk home.
