The girls were at the hair salon, getting their colors updated before the dance and Evan had taken advantage of their being under Maggie’s care to go for a long run. There had been a dusting of snow the night before and she knew there wouldn’t be many more days she could get out and run before the snow really moved in and it was just too dangerous. Sure, there was a track at the school that was kept cleared and there were treadmills inside a couple of local gyms. For Evan, she found joy in being able to just go wherever her feet took her whether that was the beach or up and down Main Street in town. It helped that the main road through town was only a couple of blocks from the house, so Evan did a ten-mile loop and slowed as she came back through downtown. She paused to stretch on a bench outside the coffee shop, then went inside to get herself a latte as a treat.

“Oh my gawd, were you actually running today?” The voice screeched across Evan’s nerves as Sue Ann spoke up from two people behind Evan in line. Since the woman hadn’t bothered saying her name, Evan tried to pretend she didn’t hear her. She placed her order and tucked her gloves into her jacket pocket as she walked down the counter to wait.

“Maybe you didn’t hear me,” Sue Ann said as she walked over to wait near Evan after placing her order. “I asked if you’d been out running.”

“I think everyone in Haven heard you,” Evan replied. “I just didn’t care to answer a stupid question.”

“You should be nicer to me,” Sue Ann said with a sniff and a toss of her bleached blond curls. “Mayor Baldwin is a friend of mine.”

“Really? Is he as good a friend as Aaron Shipley?” Evan asked, eyes wide. “Because I’m sure Mrs. Baldwin would love to know that, and Emily is a dear friend.”

Sue Ann’s eyes narrowed. “You’re being mean again. You shouldn’t be mean to me.”

“Oh, fuck off, Sue Ann. This isn’t high school. You were a vapid bitch then and you’re even more of one now. Do us both a favor and don’t try to speak to me,” Evan said as she accepted her cup and turned to leave.

A couple of older women seated at a table started to applaud as Evan’s words rang out in the coffee shop. Apparently, she wasn’t the only one fed up with Sue Ann’s bullshit.

Sue Ann’s face turned bright red. She grabbed her own cup and stormed out of the shop so fast the door banged against the wall.

“Sorry, folks. I guess my ‘inside voice’ wasn’t very quiet,” Evan said with a wry grin.

“Honey, you only said what the rest of us were thinking. You have a good day, now,” one of the women that had applauded said.

Evan gave her a jaunty salute, then headed out of the shop. She sipped her latte, smiled, then started the short walk home.
