I wake to the sound of my phone ringing. Reaching out, I search the nightstand for it then remember it’s still in my jeans. Crawling out of bed, I find my jeans on the floor and pull out my phone.

“Hello?”

My lawyer, Jensen D’Angelo says, “We have a problem.”

Wide awake at those words, I ask, “What kind of problem?”

Jensen says, “The kind where my investigator just handed me an updated fire investigation report changing the cause of your apartment fire to arson.”

Sitting on the end of the bed, I scrub my hand over my face and curse. “Shit.”

“That’s not the worst part I’m afraid. I just got notice that your court date has been moved up to next week. With this new report not only could you lose this case, but you could also see jail time if the police can gather enough evidence to prove you were the one who set the fire.”

Feeling tears prick my eyes, I say, “Thanks for letting me know.”

Jensen says, “I’m sorry Slaine. I’ll do everything I can to fight this, starting with finding out why the investigator changed his report, but we should still prepare for the worst.”

“I got it.”

Ending the call, I toss the phone onto the bed and bury my face in my hands.

“What am I going to do?” I can’t go to jail—I won’t survive and by extension, neither will Rafe. I could run but then I’d have to get Rafe to come with me and I don’t want to make him do that since he recently started over here. Besides we both have lives here and still have a lot of years before we have to remake our identities. I love New Orleans and I don’t want to leave. So, I’m going to stay and fight. If I lose, I’ll run because I’m not letting an asshole sentence Rafe and I to death when I didn’t commit the crime I’m accused of.

Fuck…if the insurance company gets their hands on the updated report, I’m screwed. They’ll never pay out.

Officially done dealing with this shit today, I grab my phone scoot back until I can crawl under the covers again. Pulling up a playlist on my music app, I hit play then drop my phone on the nightstand. Pulling the blankets over my head, I bury my face in Rafe’s pillow and try to shut out the world for a while. I’ve got to work tonight so I’ll have to get a few more hours of sleep if I can.

A few hours later, the smell of food hits my nose and my stomach growls. Crawling from my cocoon, I head into the bathroom to take care of business then put on my jeans from last night, leaving them unbuttoned. Picking up my phone, I turn off my music and look at the time. Seeing I’ve still got a few hours before I have to head home to get ready for work, I follow the scent of food to the kitchen where Rafe is pulling some delicious looking deli sandwiches from a bag.
