EIGHT

DEACON

I held tight to Asher’s hand as I dragged him down the dim hallway toward my room. I’d been clinging to him since he’d appeared in that parking lot like a mirage, and I wasn’t going to let him go until I knew I’d fixed things with us.

Or ever, really.

It had only been about three weeks since we’d broken up, but it may as well have been three years. I had no idea how I’d thought I was going to be able to just move on from him and go about my normal life. Asher was in my blood—in my soul—and he was mine.

The thought of letting him go, only for him to become someone else’s made me want to burn the entire world to the ground.

We reached my room, and I pulled him inside and slammed the door.

Then I pressed him up against the closed door.

“Asher,” I said with a low growl. “Stay here tonight.”

That was not what I’d intended to say, but it was definitely what came out.

Fortunately, he just rolled his big blue eyes at me and chuckled. “We’ll see.” He put a gentle hand on my chest to push me off of him, and then he gave me a sexy little smirk as he walked me backwards until the back of my legs hit my bed. “Sit, please.”

I did, though I would remind him later not to get used to giving orders when we were in my bedroom.

He gave me an indulgent smile, like he was proud of me for following instructions, and then he backed away a few steps before he dropped to the floor, curling his long legs under himself while he stared at me expectantly.

“I want to know why you’ve changed your mind,” he said. “Assuming that’s what this is about. If it isn’t—if this is just about getting me away from my homecoming date—then I’m leaving, Deacon. I mean it.”

“I know,” I replied quickly. “That’s not why I wanted to see you.”

His eyebrows rose in the world’s most skeptical look.

“Fine, that’s not primarily why I wanted to see you,” I amended. “I’m serious about trying to… fix this. Fix us.”

His face softened as he nodded, urging me to continue.

I made sure I was looking him right in those bottomless blue eyes. “I’m sorry, Asher. I’m sorry I reacted the way I did when you revealed what you are. I know you only did it because you saw a real future for us together. I can’t imagine what it was like for you, having to hide who you are from me for our entire relationship.”

He was already getting teary-eyed, and I wasn’t going to make it much longer without launching myself off this bed and wrapping my entire body around his if he carried on. He sniffed as he said, “We’re all used to hiding who we are as we coexist with humans. But yes—the harder I fell for you, the worse it was.”

“I’m sorry that I called you a liar,” I added because that had been shitty of me.
