Chapter Six
Alyssa sat in the office chair, staring out the glass doors as the sunshine lit the floor in front of her. She often drifted off into daydreams, and no matter how much she tried to stop them lately, they always ended in the same placeâor preferably starring the same person, Asher Raine. She couldnât even say that she knew the man, only speaking to him for a very short time, but he had captured her mind, body, and soul. Her wolf had been going crazy, not being about to see him, claim him.
Sheâd never bought into the fated mate stuff. She had figured people were just romanticizing the lust and connection they felt when that person came into their lives, but now she was starting to think that there was something to it all because she was totally fixated on the man. She did all she could to calm her wolf but wasnât doing much better with him gone and her not knowing when or if he would be back, she was stuck with dreaming about him. The fantasy was the same as every other day as she sat in her chair, looking out into the lobby.
She imagined Asher Raine standing just on the other side of that door with nothing on but the tattoos that covered his body. Only in her thoughts, she was standing at the entrance to greet him as he entered. She and her animal fought with each other about him being their mate. Her wolf would not give up on this thought, but she just could not wrap her head around the idea of some guy sheâd only met a month ago for a few days being her mate. How was it even possible to be a mate of someone that quick? Howâd her wolf know, but she could not come to terms with it? There had been a few days since he had left that sheâd wished she would have gone with him and gotten away for all the craziness that was the Raine pack, but her uncle needed her, and leaving him like that would have just been a shitty thing to do. Alyssa might be a free spirit, but she was loyal to a fault.
She was so lost in her thoughts that when the phone rang, she jumped from the sound. Upon answering it, she was shocked to hear the voice on the other end. She instantly knew who it was. Asher. It was like he knew she was thinking about him.
She was left speechless, not knowing what to say. On the one hand, she was happy to hear from him; on the other hand, this very normal conversation seemed odd. She looked around the office just to make sure no one was around. Let her wolf surface a bit just to check the territory. She was the only one there at the moment. Her uncle had left to take care of an elderly patient, and she was just manning the phones.
