A Bargain Struck

Theren’s lungs burned, each breath carving its way through his chest like a blade drawn too slow. The dagger lodged between his ribs had become a second heartbeat, dull, insistent, a cruel rhythm of failing flesh. Blood soaked his tunic, pooling beneath him in the filth of Dagger Alley, mingling with the stagnant stink of rot and piss. He pressed a trembling hand to the wound, as if he could will his body back together, as if fingers alone could hold in a life that was already spilling away.

He did not want to die.

Not here. Not in this forgotten alley where rats would pick at what remained of him. Not in the city where he had fought so hard to carve out a name. The thought of it clawed at his mind, a horror more suffocating than the pain. Death had always been something distant, something he could outrun, outthink. But no matter how fast he ran, it had found him here, kneeling in filth, his body failing him with every heartbeat.

A trembling breath rasped through his throat. His vision blurred at the edges, curling inward, as though the world itself recoiled from him. His fingers, scrabbling for purchase against the damp stone wall, slipped uselessly. His legs gave out. He collapsed onto his side, the rough cobbles scraping against his cheek. He could hear the distant din of the city beyond the alley’s mouth, laughter, the clatter of hooves, the far-off call of a vendor. The world was still moving, uncaring, unaware that he was fading from it.

A cruel thought took root. Perhaps it was not the world that had forgotten him, but he who had overestimated his place in it.

Alira’s voice rang through the haze of his mind, sharp and cutting as the dagger buried in his side.

"One day, you’ll realize you’re not invincible."

Her fingers had gripped his arm when she said it, her knuckles white with fury. Don’t go, Theren. Listen to me, for once. He had shaken her off, laughing, calling her a worrier. I know what I’m doing.

He had ridden hard through the night to prove her wrong, to deliver the warning himself, to show her that he was faster, smarter, untouchable. Now, the only thing he had proven was that she had been right.

His laugh was a broken thing, more breath than sound.

His fingers twitched against the stone, too weak to hold on.

Was this all he would be? A corpse in an alley, forgotten by morning? Would Alira even know what had become of him?

No.

He clenched his teeth, forcing himself to hold on to the pain, to the sound of his own breath, shallow, uneven, but there. He would not die here. He would not let this be the end.

Somewhere, distant yet impossibly close, a melody stirred.

A flute.

Low and sorrowful, the tune curled through the alley like a whisper from another world. The sound wrapped around him, threading through the damp air, seeping into his skin. His wound throbbed with it, a
