Daniel stepped out of the airport with his suitcase and a golf bag, which was the perfect size to conceal the molecular rearrangement gun. He was worried about transporting the dangerous artifact, but it would soon be locked into the vault where it couldn’t hurt anyone.

Do these aliens walk around on their planet with thousands of those things? Millions?

The sun was setting, and he already felt more relaxed, being far from a site where Fortis agents might be. He pushed the thoughts aside and headed home.

As soon as he stepped inside, he spotted a paper plate on a Chef Boyardee pizza box. It held a few pieces of pepperoni—Pops’ idea of making dinner. Usually, it meant he felt guilty about something.

Do you feel guilty about keeping secrets, Pops? Maybe you should unburden your soul.

The agent chuckled. He had no right to be mad when other people kept secrets. He lied to so many people about so many things that it was hard to keep track of them all. A spreadsheet of lies might be helpful.

Don’t worry, Pops. I’ll eat your peace offering once I take care of business.

He set his suitcase by the stairs and made his way to the back with the golf bag. His grandfather wasn’t there, since it was his night to hang out with friends at a neighborhood pub. His absence made things easier, at least for tonight. Daniel still wondered if he should ask the old man about what the woman at the black site had said.

Maybe she played me.

As he passed through the comics’ room, his gaze snapped to his Batman collection. A newer issue was missing. Tommy, no doubt.

The boy probably wreaks havoc when I’m not here.

Daniel smiled. Neither family troubles nor his recent beating had stripped the innocence of youth from the half-elf. That was something to be protected.

One of the main reasons he had joined the Marine Corps was an urge to protect others. He wasn’t sure why it was so strong in him. Maybe his parents’ disappearance had flipped a switch. Leaving the Corps to join the CIA and protect people from the shadow threats had been an easy transition.

Still thinking about Tommy, the agent opened the vault and placed the new weapon on the shelf beside the Munich gun. He didn’t bother to remove the artifact from the bag. It wouldn’t be touched or used ever again.

The one in the corner had already collected a small amount of dust.

This is what started it all. Pops held out on me. For all I know, he came in here an hour later and tested it or something to give a report to that elf he mentioned.

Daniel sighed. As much as it frustrated him, there had to be some good reason why his grandfather had kept things from him. The man had always been cranky, but he cared deeply about his grandson.

After sealing the vault, Daniel made his way up the stairs. He was about to leave the back room but paused to pick up one of the pictures that remained permanently face-down.
