Chapter Sixteen

"Dorothy, I'm really sorry about the mess last night. Crystal and I shouldn't have taken it that far." Buttons sounded sincerely apologetic as the two of them walked in the direction of the library.

Dorothy smiled softly, keeping her steps quick in time with his. "That's okay. I know the two of you were getting caught up in the spirit of the holiday. It was fun to see you playing together."

Buttons shook his head. "No, we destroyed so much. From your decorations to shredding napkins off the dining room table. Honestly, I don't know what got into us."

"Must be a full moon coming," she joked as they neared the town square where the library stood, tall and majestic against the pink and gold skyline.

Despite Buttons's apology, Dorothy's mind was still tangled in the remnants of the fiasco that had been their holiday gathering the evening before. The taste of frustration lingered on her tongue, mingling with a hint of regret. She vowed to make future celebrations disaster proof, though she had no idea how to pull that off right now.

"So… subject change," Buttons continued, his voice taking on a hint of curiosity and amusement.

"What's that?"

"What do you think about Zoe and Kai?"

Dorothy pursed her lips, deep in thought as they walked along.

"I can't lie. I have my concerns. Zoe's never had a boyfriend before, at least, not that I know of. And it will be interesting to see how this plays out. Kai's Arapaho heritage is a wonderful thing, and I look forward to learning more about their customs and culture if things go well between them. Talking with Sarah and Caleb about Arapaho culture has reignited my interest in the cultures that live in this area. I need to do more studying." Dorothy smiled as she thought about the richness of the culture this could bring to her life and to Zoe's.

"Family is an interesting dynamic, isn't it? Every time you add someone new to the mix, you have to readjust and find a place for that person, even if for a short time." Buttons’ tail twitched back and forth as they walked.

"I guess it's good for us, right? Forces us to grow and change.” They reached the library, pulling open the enormous oak doors and feeling a warm rush of air envelop them.

As they entered the commons, her eyes roamed over the shelves, their contents a treasure trove of stories and wisdom waiting to be discovered. Avery was behind the reference desk, surrounded by stacks of books waiting to be returned to their rightful positions on the shelves. She looked up, smiling when she saw Dorothy, taking off her half glasses and rubbing her temples as she waved Dorothy over.

"Dorothy, good morning! Hi, Buttons! What brings you guys in here today?" Avery asked, her voice filled with genuine curiosity.

Dorothy stepped closer to the desk, her eyes glancing at Buttons, who had already scurried off to a corner, his nose twitching in pursuit of a group of mischievous mice. "Hi, Avery.
