Recent exhibits have included Gravity and Grace: Monumental Works by El Anatsui, an artist from Ghana, now living in Nigeria. This work consists of 30 pieces in metal, wood, and combinations of sculpture and painting. Included in this large work are 12 monumental wall and floor sculptures made from bottle caps the artist found in a distillery in Nigeria. (This work reflects the artist’s fascination with how things change and take on new shapes.) Another exhibit of interest was one called Raw/Cooked, which consisted of a series of exhibitions by lesser-known Brooklyn artists. One of them, Marela Zacarias, created Williamsburg Murals, which reflects her interest in urban renewal and the history of objects; large abstract forms seem to climb up the walls and interact with the museum’s architecture.

Note the five WPA murals in the corridors (rescued from other sites): these works by American modernists Ilya Bolotowsky, Paul Kelpe, Albert Swinden, and Balcomb Greene were painted between 1936 and 1937 for a housing project. These abstract works may be the first such murals in the country.

The museum is active in many other areas, as well, sponsoring programs in dance and film, lectures, art classes, and craft demonstrations.

November–February, Tuesday–Friday 8 AM–4:30 PM, Saturday and Sunday 10 AM–4:30 PM; March–October, Tuesday–Friday 8 AM–6 PM, Saturday and Sunday 10 AM–6 PM. (Closed Monday.)
