This is what I wrote on a notebook propped

against my steering wheel driving east across Saskatchewan

on Canada Day. Why is a hangman like a journalist?

They both have a nose for noose. The current

is the only thing swift about Swift Current.

The root of everything is rot.

And as penance for having written this I stopped

at a roadside restaurant with a sign saying

VELMA’S GIANT CINNAMON BUNS

and ordered one. It was sickening,

floating in a pool of butter, and Velma

stood over me, making sure I ate every soggy crumb.
