Galleria Borghese

Located within the building of the Villa Borghese Pinciana, the Borghese Gallery hosts a significant proportion of the collection begun by Cardinal Scipione Borghese. Known today as the Borghese collection, it consists mainly of paintings, sculpture, and ancient artefacts. Of significance within the collection are works by Bernini, Caravaggio (of whose works Scipione Borghese was a keen collector), Titian, Raphael, and Barocci.

Whilst the villa was made into a public art museum in the latter half of the 18th century, it became necessary that it be sold to the Italian government in the beginning of the 1900s.

Today the museum space occupies around twenty rooms spaced over two floors in the villa, focussing on art from classical antiquity and classical sculpture, as well as hosting the collection of the National Museum of Musical Instruments, the single largest collection ever gifted to the museum.
