Ever leaned forward in her chair, wondering when Ash would wake up. The young woman looked as if she were sleeping, the rise and fall of her chest reassuring Ever that Ash was indeed okay. Derek had spent most of the night pacing the floor until Donnie pulled him away to speak to Kenzie.

The blood-kissed girl was distraught at the thought she’d hurt Ash and could be manipulated by Odin in such a way. There was a strange debate now sounding in the kitchen as Kenzie tried to persuade Caitlyn to change her.

Ever had closed the door to the bedroom a short time later, not wanting her daughter disturbed. Ash looked so young, lying in bed as Ever squeezed her hand.

“Come on, Ash. Time to wake up now.”

And yet, Ash didn’t so much as twitch in response.

Donnie reassured both Ever and Derek that Ash was simply using her sleep to recover from the effects of the poison and that her mind, her mind was very active. When Ever had asked Donnie to divulge what was inside her daughter’s mind, Donnie had given her one of his charming smiles.

“I told you before that unless it’s life or death, I will keep the secrets of those not strong enough to shield their thoughts from me. Ash is family, and I will not betray her trust.”

Donnie had left shortly after, and Ever had felt so lost, so unable to help the girl who’d left her friends and family to travel back in time to stop Ever from making the biggest mistake of her life.

The door to the bedroom opened, and Erika stepped inside. Her whiskey-colored eyes darted to the bed and, with a sheepish grin and the faint imprint of fingertips around her neck, Erika said, “Please don’t kill me for this, but I know how to get her to wake up.”

Hope sparked inside Ever’s chest, then suddenly dropped to the pit of her stomach as Erika stepped aside and Loki’s son strode into the room, his eyes firmly fixed on Ash.

The baby in her stomach began to move in a frenzy, and Fenrir glanced at Ever with the most wolfish grin she had seen in her entire life. Her heart raced so fast she felt dizzy, and she placed a hand on her stomach to try and calm the child inside her.

When Ever lifted her gaze to clash with Fenrir again, she sucked in a breath as the young man walked over to her seat. He reached out and placed his palm on the top of her rounded belly and said in a commanding tone, “Rest.”

The movement stopped, and Fenrir winked before turning his attention back to the prone figure in the bed. He brushed Ash’s hair from her face, and Ever saw a muscle in her daughter’s cheek twitch.

“Ashlyn.”

Ever watched as her daughter’s fist clenched, and Fenrir continued.

“Wake up, Ashlyn. Wake up little red. The big bad wolf is here, and he is rather pissed off at you. Now, stop being a goddamn martyr, Ashlyn, and wake the hell up.
