23: Fight at Sea

Eileen was beside herself. She was absolutely astonished that they were able to break Christina out of the prison. She was also really pleased with the effects of her potion since she had not used the ingredients that she normally used. Traveling all over Shaul meant that she had to find a substitute for plants she was familiar with, which meant using plants that were new and exciting to her.

Unfortunately, she didn’t have time to note about how effective this particular concoction had been in causing the target to gag and vomit upon inhaling it. At the moment, she was clinging to the side of the ship for dear life.

Eileen had not traveled by ship before. At least, she had not traveled this quickly and erratically by ship before. Captain Greenleaf had replaced his first mate at the helm. He was currently shouting orders at every sailor who could listen and obey. His first mate was running all over the ship ensuring that ropes were tied down and fallen sailors were back on their feet in moments.

Eileen was not being the least bit helpful. She was clinging to the railing and swearing by means of every single phrase or word she had heard in her entire life.

A cannonball zoomed by her head and crashed into the other side of the ship. Eileen screamed at the sound of splintering wood, realizing how close she had come to losing her head to a flying ball of metal.

“We’ve got to get away from here!” she yelled.

No one had the decency to respond to her. Granted, that was probably because they were already attempting to flee as quickly as they could.

“Tie down that rope!” Captain Greenleaf shouted. “Hoist up the sail! Get that cannon ready to fire! Return fire immediately! Dump whatever we can! We need all the speed we’ve got! Rowers!”

Little of it made sense to Eileen. She was screaming and trying not to lose her head. And she was failing magnificently.

Kel and Lenay were close by. They were following the orders of any sailor who would give them orders. Eileen got the impression that neither of them had been on a ship before, but that didn’t stop them from obeying whatever command came out of the captain’s mouth. Other sailors around her also served Captain Greenleaf and followed whatever command he gave. But Eileen couldn’t unglue herself from the railing.

“Eileen!” Kyne shouted as he ran over to her.

She looked into his eyes and tried to communicate just how terrified she was. It was impossible for her to say the words out loud, but she could tell that Kyne could recognize that she was scared out of her mind.

“Just hold on to the rail!” he shouted at her. “They’re coming up close now!”

Horrified, Eileen looked back and saw that Kyne was right. Even though Captain Greenleaf’s ship was sailing as quickly as she had ever seen a vessel sail, the other ship was gaining on them. She didn’t know why. Maybe it was skinnier than their ship.
