CHAPTER EIGHT
The final day of the Full Moon dawned and it brought with it mist that clung to everything. Nothing was going to be dry for days, and I made the decision that the heating would have to go on for a bit this evening, even if it was just to dry myself out. Iâd been trying to avoid it as much as possible, the better to preserve what fuel we had. No easy feat when you live with Erin Slater. She likes to have the heating on full blast. We were really low, and Iâd have to contact Brathay Fuels to deliver some more. This was the sort of weather that could easily become depressing, and it was a hard job convincing myself that the summer would be lovely and hot. It was especially difficult when everything was soaked through within seconds of leaving the house. You couldnât see the other side of the lake, and it gave the whole area an air of mystery, almost like it was straight out of a novel. Some might call it romantic. I called it a bloody nuisance. Itâs a good job my hair is dead straight, as not even magic could keep it in check. I certainly donât envy the wolves trying to stay dry.
There wasnât much to be done on a day like that, so once any outside chores were done, we all kept indoors. Iâd needed to check the Wards were live and secure, so was soaked to the skin when I got back to the house. Iâd added what seemed like half a dozen layers of clothing to try and keep warm, sat watching a film under my duvet on the sofa, and even filled up a hot water bottle. By lunchtime, I had just started to thaw. The Pack had told me that they were going to do something similar, although they didnât need the extra clothes. Their body temperatures ran a few degrees higher than ours, so they were able to stay warmer for longer.
The afternoon dragged itself out. I did my best to keep myself occupied, researching how to treat wooden sculptures so they would last, and having a proper look at the prices those sorts of things sell for. Prices seem to range from twenty pounds up to well over a couple of hundred for really big items. Itâs amazing what people will pay for, but it boded well for the business idea.
At five oâclock the Pack had assembled, ready for the final hunt. The rain had eased, but the mist was still hanging around. They were going across the water to Dowthwaithead, a new hunting area theyâd not been to before. Iâd have been worried, but the wolves had an extremely good nose for direction, so I knew theyâd be okay.
The older cubs, the ones who would be adults very soon, were antsy, anxious to be off and show their elders what theyâd learned. More than once, I noticed Alex shout at one â was it Daniel? â who was pushing in front before it was time to go.
