CHAPTER SEVEN

“Katherine!”

Kat froze as she stepped off the elevator and into the DataRightly lobby. Suzanne Ryan stood near the door leading into the office area, waving one arm so enthusiastically her turquoise peasant skirt was undulating.

Or maybe her rustling skirt was the result of her restless baby kicking up a storm again.

Kat mentally cursed herself for not waiting one more minute before boarding that elevator. Then perhaps she could have avoided the mother-to-be and her stomach-touching demands.

She looked around the lobby, hoping to spot someone who could rescue her. But Wendy hadn’t arrived yet, and it was clear Suzanne didn’t plan to go through that door without Kat beside her.

Perhaps her best bet would be to keep her hands occupied before Suzanne found some other use for them.

“Let me get that door for you,” she said, hurrying across the lobby and grabbing the doorknob with both hands.

Suzanne looked a bit startled by Kat’s zeal. “Oh, thank you.”

Kat slipped partway behind the door as she opened it, using it as a shield. “I don’t want you to strain yourself.”

“You’re so kind.” Suzanne patted her midsection. “And wouldn’t you know it, this little girl has been wreaking havoc with my organs all morning. She wouldn’t even let me hold down a piece of toast for breakfast.”

After dealing with Tom’s vomiting bout the evening prior, Kat had no desire to listen to throw-up talk. She quickly changed the subject.

“I ran into Kim at the vet’s office yesterday,” she said as she followed Suzanne into the hallway.

Suzanne glanced at her. “Oh?”

“I guess Countess Burgess needed her shots. She knew about Zack Lawson and his arrest.”

They were nearing Suzanne’s office, so Kat stopped walking. Suzanne followed suit.

“Well, that’s not surprising,” Suzanne said. “She and Maura are good friends. Maura probably filled her in.”

“She also said she asked you to keep her involved with any major work decisions—decisions like hiring new personnel.”

Suzanne frowned. “She never told me that.”

“She says she sent you an email.”

“She must be mistaken. I never received any emails like that.”

Kat wondered if the whole thing had been a simple miscommunication. Could she be blowing the entire incident out of proportion, twisting Suzanne’s motives into something sinister, solely because Natalie Grimes’s unsolved murder was making her suspicious of everyone?

“What in particular on Zack’s résumé made you so eager to hire him?” she asked.

“Where do I begin?” Suzanne said.

“He sounded that good, huh?”

“Not just good, perfect. For starters, he has experience working in Human Resources. And he made it clear he only wanted a six- to nine-month position since he was returning to school next fall to work toward a postbaccalaureate in computer science. He said he would love to gain some experience in a small technology organization before then, and that DataRightly sounded like his dream company.”

It seemed to Kat that Zack might have been coached on what to say to pique Suzanne’s interest. Was that Wendy Dumont’s doing?

Suzanne sighed. “I guess I should know by now there’s such a thing as too good to be true.
