CHAPTER 15

Bastion

The walk back to the cottage was pleasant. After a long bout of rainy weather, the day was beautiful, and I was glad my alpha suggested it. I usually didn’t mind spending all my time in the house, but after my session with the social worker and then waking up to find Arden gone, I needed a little air.

We weren’t touching, but we were walking close enough that his hand occasionally brushed over mine, and every time it did, sparks shot between us. That had been happening more and more lately, but I wasn’t sure what it meant. I had some hopes, but I wouldn’t let them fully form. I couldn’t deal with the disappointment if I was wrong. Next time I got to the doctor, I’d try to work up the courage to ask about it.

We didn’t talk much along the way, but the silence wasn’t uncomfortable. My alpha was weary of everyone outside of his immediate bubble and had us all being extra cautious, so we stayed quiet and just enjoyed the air and some time away from all the people.

My mind was racing though, my conversation with my social worker running on repeat. I didn’t know if Beatrice had given the information about dynamics to Arden like she said she would. He hadn’t mentioned it, but there hadn’t really been an opportunity to. I was exhausted after the session and had fallen asleep before I even made it back to the rooms, and then Arden was busy with . . . whatever he was doing with Orion and Lyric.

I was well aware of the fact that things were being kept from me. I wasn’t sure if it was because we were constantly being spied on and there hadn’t been the opportunity to safely fill me in or if it was something else. Normally, I’d attribute it to being an omega and not needing to know alphas’ business, but that didn’t apply here. From the little Lyric had been able to tell me before, he was deeply involved in basically everything, and Jett helped too.

That tightness in my gut that I felt every time I thought about it started to come, so I tried to push it down. It wasn’t my business anyway.

As usual, Arden noticed my change in mood and discreetly ran his fingers along the back of my hand. Even that light touch lit something inside of me, and the confusion and hurt I felt from being left out was completely forgotten. Now, all I could think about was that one little word that Beatrice mentioned . . . daddy.

Everything felt better when we made it to the cottage. We hadn’t gotten to spend much time there, but I was already considering it my home. Arden even let me pick out a bunch of soft and cozy blankets that were currently on literally the best chair I’d ever sat on. Arden asked me if I wanted to bring some to his rooms in the main house, but I declined.
