Lilly cleaned up breakfast, insisting that she didnât need help because she wanted to pay back even in a small way, their kindness. Of course when it came to starting the dishwashing machine, she had to ask Tray for help, and he laughed as he told her how to add the soap and push the right buttons.
âNeat,â she said as the machine started to whir. âSo convenient!â
âThe modern world is full of conveniences. Wait until you hear about the microwave oven and cable television,â Dallas said from the living room, obviously eavesdropping.
âThat sounds interesting,â she called back, but she wasnât sure her voice hid all of her apprehension.
They moved to the living room then, where Patrick was sitting looking nervous, and for an alpha that really didnât bode well. Tray sat beside her on the couch and grabbed one of her hands in his. She was too worried to pull away, she let him try and offer comfort.
âTell me,â she demanded. âWhatever it is, just tell me.â
âThere was a disease that wiped out most of the werewolves in the U.S. The Georgia pack didnât make it. Your father didnât make it,â Patrick said.
âOh,â Lilly said and dropped her gaze to her bare feet, her toes curling into the thick rug. She was really and truly alone, at the mercy of these men. Her options had been cut, her vague plan of finding anyone who might feel obligated to help her because of her father was dashed.
She gasped for a breath, suddenly her skin itched, and she had to run. She bolted from the house, shifting to wolf as soon as she hit the porch and ran.
She knew Tray followed, of course he followed. She could feel his presence close behind, could hear his footsteps and breathing, but he didnât overtake her, didnât try and stop her. She ran and ran. She hit a wide road with speeding vehicles that confused her eyes and she turned, running the other direction. She crested a hill and looked down on a huge expanse of houses and roads. She howled and took off in another direction, away from the humans. She came to a lake and watched briefly as boats sped, people splashed, and music blared. She took off in another direction and ran and ran. Nothing she saw did she recognize. Nothing was the same and she felt like a time traveler lost in a future where she never should have been, didnât want to be.
She didnât stop until she couldnât breathe, and her legs ached. She collapsed in a heap in the dirt and panted, hating that her full strength hadnât returned. Sheâd run for maybe two hours, but she should have been able to run without stopping for at least five.
Tray stood over her, breathing heavy but still obviously in control, he was strong and capable, everything a werewolf was meant to be. He watched over her and listened for danger as she lay helpless. She felt safe with him watching, knew that she could close her eyes and wait for her strength to return.
