Of course, most people would argue that a miniscule fraction of a point or the difference between the number one and number two class ranking isn’t significant. Students can rank well below the top ten or twenty percent and still have excellent grades and be considered high achievers. But lawsuits show the intensity of the pressure that some students are feeling. They feel they must do something extraordinary to make themselves stand out among thousands and thousands of college applicants. In reality, however, a small difference in class ranking is unlikely to make any difference in the college admission process.
