Lindsey Stone and her friend Jamie Schuh enjoyed taking ridiculous pictures. It was kind of their thing. For instance, they might take a picture of the two of them smoking in front of a No Smoking sign. Or maybe they would take a picture in front of statue mimicking its pose.

But when Stone posed for a picture in front of the Silence and Respect sign at Arlington National Cemetery, she never imagined the reaction she would get. Instead of causing a laugh and a few disgruntled remarks from friends, the photo of her staged to look like she was yelling while making an inappropriate gesture found its way around the Internet.

Schuh had posted the picture to Facebook and tagged Stone with her permission. Yet even when their friends expressed their dislike, Stone left the photo up and posted a comment instead. “Whoa whoa whoa . . . wait,” Stone wrote on her Facebook page. “This is just us being the douchebags that we are, challenging authority in general. Much like the pic posted the night before, of me smoking right next to a no smoking sign. OBVIOUSLY we meant NO disrespect to people that serve or have served our country.”1
