An American sect

We will now look at a widely spread sect which, however, being established only after Steiner’s death, was not mentioned by him. It can serve here as an example of the working of Western, American sects. We are referring to the Church of Scientology, founded by science-fiction writer Lafayette Ronald Hubbard (1911-1986).

The methods employed by Hubbard and his successors are intended to lead people to the point where they free themselves from all psychological-personal and destiny-related connections.

What do the members of this ‘church’ want? They are preparing a new culture. For this they have to be ‘clean’: this means they should free themselves from everything that oppresses them psychologically and from all the undigested problems they carry around with them. To achieve this the member has to buy and complete an expensive series of courses. If they don’t have enough money, they can borrow—even to the point of bankruptcy. Members who want to leave this ‘church’ are persecuted and threatened, as credibly reported by former members.

We are inclined to see in Hubbard an egoless leader with a strong ahrimanic effect and influence, who neither wanted nor was able, psychologically or physically, to let the members go. ‘Respect for people’s freedom,’ however, is the magical phrase that needs to be alive in all co-operative spiritual work and aspiration. Where this is not the case, it is not possible for a new culture to arise from the work, even though this is what Hubbard proclaimed as the objective of his ‘church’. Raising money from members does, however, make for a financially powerful worldwide enterprise.

We can ask another question: Is Hubbard also one of the deceased who from beyond the threshold can exert an influence on the still-living members with the help of ceremonial magic, even though Hubbard is a being without a human Ego?

We consider we have to answer this question with a ‘yes’.

A film worth seeing, the American thriller The Game (1997) with Michael Douglas, about the practices of the Church of Scientology, gives a complete picture for anyone interested.
