âW hat are you doing here?â I cry when Iâve recovered from my initial shock. âNo one was expecting you. Have you returned to the Merge for good? Are you going back to Diamond?â
âArchie,â Inez says, patting my shoulder to calm me. When I stop babbling, she turns to King Lloyd and makes the greet. He stares at her solemnly, then snorts.
âLetâs have none of that nonsense,â he says. âI want a hug.â He pulls us in close and squeezes as hard as he can, which isnât very hard at all.
âYouâve been in New York too long,â Nora, his aide, tuts behind him.
âHuggingâs nicer than the greet,â King Lloyd says. âI put up with the greet for a long time, because it was expected, but at this stage of the gameâ¦â He coughs and releases us.
âDo you want a hug too?â I ask Nora innocently.
âCome near me and Iâll clout your ear, boy,â she growls, fighting to hide a smirk. She solemnly makes the greet, then gives in and smiles. âYour faces when you caught sight of us,â she chuckles, taking King Lloyd by an arm and leading him gently to a nearby chair. There are chairs for the rest of us as well.
The kingâs beaming and drumming his fingers on his knees. âItâs good to see you again, Archibald and Inez. I forget a lot these days â more than I realise, probably â but thankfully Iâve held on to my memories of you. That day in my palace, when you stopped the noises and rescued me from hellâ¦â Tears well in his eyes and I turn my head aside.
âNo need to look away,â King Lloyd says, reaching over to let his fingers dance across my left knee. âThese are tears of happiness, not madness. The madness is still there, but itâs not as bad as it was, is it, Nora?â
âNo, my lord,â Nora says. âSome days you could even pass for half-normal.â
King Lloyd scowls. âOf all my subjects, why did she have to be the one that ended up looking after me?â he complains to Inez.
âThere werenât many left in the end,â Inez says with a straight face. âI guess she was the best of a bad lot.â
Nora laughs out loud, then covers her mouth with a hand, looking contrite.
âI hope I seem half-normal tomorrow,â King Lloyd says, his smile slipping. âI have good days and bad days. Iâm keeping my fingers crossed that tomorrow will be one of the good ones.â
âIt will,â Nora says kindly. âAnd if not, nobody will care. Theyâll be so happy to see you that they wonât mind if you drop your trousers and drool.â
âIâm not so sure of that,â King Lloyd mutters. âNot so sure.â
The king looks away and starts mumbling something. Nora looks at us and sighs. âIâm keeping my fingers crossed too,â she whispers.
âIs he often like this?â Inez asks, staring sadly at the distracted king.
âYes,â Nora says, âbut rarely for long periods. Heâll snap back to his senses in a matter of minutes.
