“I suppose this is the best place to start.”

I really think she made an effort to keep the grudging tone out of her voice.

Unfortunately, the angel of truthiness will prevail.

We took a moment to gaze up at the red stone frame marking the entrance to Morningstar Haven, the one place on Earth where humans knew about angels and demons, in some cases more than the angels and demons knew about themselves. If any celestial beings had convened to discuss the destruction of Heaven, they would have had at least one meeting at the Haven bar, and Teresa would have heard something about it.

Remember how Teresa hates you?

Well, I’m sure she likes Siren. I mean, she mostly hates me ’cuz I’m a demon. Was a demon.

Um. About that. Remember how Haven’s one holiday happens because Siren gets totally trashed once a year, and no one who lives here wants to witness the fallout.

So… we’ll have to count on Teresa’s forgiveness going hand in hand with God’s.

Good luck with that. You never ruined God’s blender by seeing what would happen if you mixed cherry cola and liquid mercury.

Siren headed past the row of red-stone houses with her chin up, not noticing the way heads swiveled to take in her petite form. I suspected the Havenfolk weren’t used to encountering angels they didn’t know, as there were fewer than a thousand of us in creation.

I nodded politely to the gaping bystanders. ”Hey, Joe! Ooh, Sumatra, how’s the baby? Kensington, didn’t know you were back!” A few stammered out something that passed as a greeting, but most of them just gawked. And I couldn’t help noticing some of them gave me the same double-take they were giving my companion.

Are they surprised I’m with an angel or surprised I am an angel?

Khet would know.

Khet’s not here. And I plan to keep it that way.

Aww, why? Want to keep this place all to yourself?

No. It’s just… Gabs’s lustrous locks, if she came here, they’d dissect her. I’m pretty sure not literally, but… she’s better off far away from these people.

It’s true. I think they may even be immune to love. I don’t see shadows around any of them.

Well, that could just be because the Haven blocks angel power.

I trotted to catch up with Siren. “You know you’re scaring the locals.”

A snort that loud shouldn’t have been possible from someone with such small nasal cavities. “Like I care what the locals here think.”

I was going to say something unoriginal, like, “Tell me what you really think,” but I caught wind of her emphasis. “Wait. There are locals somewhere whose opinion you do care about?”

She gave me a bright grin. “Fair point. Not really. But these people, these Haven dwellers, they think their purpose is to cater to angels, to record angel history. It’s not. It’s always been to protect the nephilim from angels. And they have failed at that task.” She waved her hand when she saw me about to interrupt. “Oh, I know there’re still a few left.
