Tristan

The darkness comes quickly, as if the vision is in a hurry. Tristan finds himself floating in space, endless black surrounding him broken by glittering specks of light. Suns and stars, so tiny, and yet each is a world of its own.

Tristan doubts he’ll ever stop being humbled by the fact he and the Zodiacs have been tasked with keeping every inch of this vastness safe.

He turns, wondering why he’s here, and gasps. A vibrant blue planet is in the distance, two white rings surrounding it. It’s big and beautiful and breathtaking. A part of him wants to go to it. To see if there’s life on it.

But the image fades, little more than a snapshot of the beauty that exists out here in space.

Tristan holds his breath, conscious the second vision is coming. He even closes his eyes for a brief moment, bracing himself. Nothing bad happened in the first vision.

The second will be the destruction they’re supposed to prevent.

He’s still not ready for what he finds when he opens his eyes. The blue planet is gone. Destroyed.

Tristan’s now floating among nothing but debris. Rocks ranging from the size of a jagged meteor to a listless fleck of dust. His eyes widen as he does a slow turn. “No,” he breathes.

How could an entire planet be smashed to smithereens like that?

One answer punches through Tristan’s mind.

Chardis.

At the next blink, the scene disappears, and he finds himself once more in HQ. The Zodiacs look at him, faces painted with various shades of apprehension. And unfortunately, it’s warranted.

He’s just seen a blue planet at the same point in time, but with two very different outcomes.

In one, it and every life on it survives.

In the other, it’s totally obliterated.
