Designing the grow tray. There are a number of ways to build the grow tray. We will outline two that we like for this purpose. Both replace the aquarium canopy entirely and cover the canopy area with the aquaponic filter.

The first style requires two food grade plastic pans. One serves as the support structure and the other is the actual grow pan. The grow pan must be slightly smaller than the bottom dimensions of the support tray. The support tray has most of the bottom removed to allow the grow tray to be inserted into the inverted support tray.

The support tray should be as closely matched to the actual dimensions of the aquarium as possible. Both of these units should be made of food grade plastic and be completely inert to pH and aquarium water components. The support tray would be placed on the bottom plate shown below.

The second style still requires obtaining a food grade plastic grow tray with dimensions slightly less than the actual aquarium footprint. But instead of an inverted support tray of the same design, you might want to opt for a more stylish and utilitarian design.

In this case, there is no need to source a support tray of the correct dimensions. This can be difficult depending on the actual footprint of your aquarium. Instead, you can custom design the support for the growing trays. For larger aquariums, this design is probably the one you will opt for. It is simple and easy to outsource. Chances of finding a suitable support tray in the exact dimensions of the aquarium are not that great.
