I'd seen worse. In fact, the guy was growing on me. His job wasn’t great from where I was sitting, but it wasn't his fault he was here to determine if he should blacklist Battle Lake. I owned at least half of that. With that in mind, I found I genuinely wanted to do something nice for him, not only to bribe him, but because I suspected he was a good guy.

I pulled up WorldCat.org to search for the book I had in mind. I discovered it at a southeastern Minnesota library. I ordered it overnighted on interlibrary loan, hitting the submit button just as someone appeared at the front counter asking for help locating “that book about the people who travel and one of them’s a plumber?”

Before I knew it, it was almost closing time.

“What a day!” I said.

Mrs. Berns could only nod, swiping the back of her hand across her forehead in the universal I’m beat! gesture. You wouldn't think library work would be so demanding. You would be wrong. It combines the best as well as the most challenging aspects of retail, counseling, conflict resolution, detective work, and party planning. Speaking of, the first teenage girls were filing in, peering around the library tentatively.

“Mrs. Berns!” I couldn’t hide the gratitude from my voice. “You handed out the flyers!”

“What, am I trying to form a garage band? No, I did not hand out flyers. I jogged over to the high school and asked the principal to announce what was going on tonight. He said he would, and not only that, he’d award community service points to any girls who attended.”

I smiled broadly. “You're a genius.”

“It is the ant who thinks the grasshopper a giant,” she said, cackling.

I lunged for her underarms.

“Don't even think about it,” she said. “That level of bodywork is not for uninitiated.”

I shook my head. “Do you know if Kennie is coming by? I don't have a curriculum plan for tonight.”

Mrs. Berns pointed at the door by way of answer.
