W3Health serves the health care industry. Its core offering is a Web-based customized reporting and analysis solution that delivers robust decision-making application support to health care enterprises. It is designed to help health care organizations control costs and improve the quality of the care they deliver. In this industry, although cost effectiveness is a priority, the ability to deliver high-quality care is even more important. W3Health is active across the United States. Among them are national consulting firm Managed Care Resources, Internet-based communications channel HealthTrio, health care software vendor Confer Software, and analytic tool developer Symmetry Health Data Systems, Inc. They enable this ASP to deliver an innovative Web-based comprehensive solution that is rapidly accessible, usable, and manageable (W3Health, 2001).

In early 2001, Yale-New Haven Physician Hospital Organization (PHO), delivered health care services to more than 200,000 members and employed over 1,000 physicians. It needed an integrated system not only to analyze data from multiple participants in the health care market, such as individual physicians, medical directors, and senior company executives, but also to make fast, informed decisions. The primary challenge for this health care organization was to unify and harmonize disparate information coming from diverse sources in different formats. It was looking for a full range of services to fully implement and remotely manage the selected application, customization to adapt the application to its internal business needs, deep industry knowledge to satisfy its internal harmonization and centralization requirements, and access to a powerful solution at a variable cost to avoid the burden of high and increasing overhead IT costs. It selected W3Health’s W3 Distributed Reporting System (DRS) to outsource its entire data management, application hosting, and maintenance functions (W3Health, 2001).

W3Health’s W3-based solution enabled this health care organization to deploy a new reporting and analysis application to a wide base of users, which proved easy to access, use, and manage, while also reducing its total cost of ownership and maximizing use of the application. With W3, the Yale-New Haven PHO was now able not only to extract, clean, integrate, build, and load data, add clinical intelligence throughout its systems, and host and maintain applications, but also to receive analytic consulting services and seamlessly connect disparate entities. This was possible because W3Health had an in-depth understanding of specific health care industry challenges and had a strong application configuration methodology, enhanced by the Web, which accelerated the application implementation. Tucker Leary, executive director of PHO, was enthusiastic about the results: “The W3 system is an ideal way for us to analyze data from the multiple payors in our market” (W3Health, 2001).
