After Grace was gone, I locked the door behind her and set about my closing tasks. The deposit wasn’t even large enough to bother with. I put the money in the safe and went about the routine of doing a pile of dishes so I’d be ready to face tomorrow. Hopefully it would produce better results than the day I’d just gone through had.

If I had any luck at all, I’d do better at sleuthing than peddling donuts anyway, but only time would tell.

Chapter 9

Instead of going back to my empty cottage, I decided to head straight to Momma’s to see if she felt like pitching in on another investigation. We’d worked surprisingly well together in the past on a few occasions, and while Jake and Grace were my first choices, Momma was definitely a viable option. After that, George was a solid partner, and I’d even worked on a few things with my stepfather, Phillip, the former police chief for April Springs. It was funny, but I found that I liked him a lot better once he wasn’t in charge of things.

I had a feeling he felt the same way about me.

I was about to knock on their door when Phillip opened it before I could finish my task. He had lost a great deal of weight when he’d been courting my mother, but a little of it had come back since, though not nearly as much as it had once been. “Hey, Suzanne. I was just about to head over to the donut shop.”

“I have a few extras in the back of my Jeep,” I volunteered. “You’re welcome to whatever I’ve still got.”

“Really? Are there any sour cream cake donuts, by any chance?”

“I think there’s one there. Let’s go check.” As we walked back to the Jeep, I asked, “Is that really why you were coming by to see me?”

“No, I have a message for you from your mother. She’s going out of town for a few days, and she wanted me to tell you not to worry if you didn’t hear from her.”

“Why didn’t she call me herself?” I asked him. It wasn’t like Momma not to keep me up to speed on her whereabouts.

“She tried, but for some reason she couldn’t get you. Did you have your cell phone off this morning, by any chance?”

I suddenly remembered that I’d turned it off for a bit so I could concentrate on making donuts, and then I’d forgotten to turn it back on until later. My goodness, the older I got, the more forgetful I seemed to be. If I was already losing my mind in my thirties, I was in for some serious trouble down the road. “I left it on the counter when I took my cart over to city hall,” I admitted. “Where is she going?”

“She’s got some kind of real estate opportunity in Howling Rock,” he said, naming a resort town about an hour from us, straight up into the Blue Ridge Mountains and not far from the Parkway.
