Chapter Fourteen
Guardian Angel
âHand it over.â Persy motioned for Varian to fork over his phone.
âWhy?â He stretched out the vowel as his eyes narrowed in on her. Persy felt mildly insulted at the mageâs suspicion.
âI need to text my professors, boss, family and let them know there was an emergency and I wonât be around for a while. You know, considering you kidnapped us and all, weâre stranded without our cellphones, and weâre driving through the middle of nowhere without any idea when weâll be able to go home.â Eyes rolling, she stuck her hand out farther.
âWe know weâre going to Iowa.â The phantom nodded her head emphatically, as if knowing their potential destination made any difference.
âI donât even know what state weâre in,â Persy retorted.
âWe are currently in Utah. For furtherââ
âThanks, beautiful. Thatâs all,â Varian quickly shot down Morgan.
Irritated by Varianâs reluctance, Persy lunged towards the cupholder. Fingertips brushing against the cool glass of the phoneâs screen, thatâs as far she got before Varian snatched it out of her reach.
âYou canât just use a Bureau-issued phone to make personal calls.â The mage scowled at her.
âWhat do you expect us to do? We have lives, Varian. Persy has a point.â Max gave him a look, his hands squeezing Persyâs thigh in silent support.
A knot in Persyâs chest untangled. This is what she loved most about Max. How he always sensed when she was on edge. How he let her fight her own battles, but always jumped in to give his support. There was no questioning that Max cared about her. It was etched onto his every word or action.
Maxâs hand started kneading against her thighs. Allowing herself to bask in the sensation for a moment, Persyâs head tipped back a fraction.
Thatâs when it hit her.
âWe should be contacting our family anyway. What better source on the Conu than the original crusaders and their children? My mom might know something, Maxâs parents too, and we already know your dad knows things, Varian. Iâm assuming heâs still alive?â There was no arguing with her logic, Persy was confident about that.
âI have no way to contact my father, and I donât know where he is,â Varian said flatly, his jaw clenching.
âYou donât even have his phone number?â She was flabbergasted.
âNoâ was the clipped response he gave.
Yikes. Yeah, Persy wasnât about to touch that topic with a ten-foot pole. Not with Varian giving her the death glare.
âWe still could reach out to our parents,â the healer insisted.
âThe crusaders would have already reported what they knew to the Council. Iâm sure your parents were also questioned before the Bureau sent over the report.â Varian shook his head.
âNeither of my parents do well with authority; I donât think they would have said anything if a bunch of agents showed up at their door asking questions.â Max crinkled his nose in disbelief as he pondered that scenario.
âAgreed,â Persy lied. She knew her mother would fork up any and all information if the Bureau knocked on her door solely so she could brag about it to her friends.
