Chapter 22

Hands gripped my ankles. My head bounced against the fleshy sides of the pit.

"It's closing up!" Shelton shouted.

"Got him!" Adam yelled back as another pair of hands grabbed my other ankle.

My back squeaked against the side of the pit and daylight filled my vision again. Adam and Shelton dragged me back to the small area of safety before helping me to my feet.

Elyssa lay on her side, eyes closed. Ambria huddled next to her, eyes filled with pain. Meanwhile, the floating brain was embroiled in an all-out war for survival against the ground. The fleshy earth quivered beneath us, sending chills up my spine.

Max zapped a couple more bugs that flew too close.

"This place is a freaking nightmare." I shivered, suddenly cold. "I'd rather be trapped on lizard world than be eaten by the ground I'm standing on."

"But you and Nightliss are exhausted." Shelton shook his head. "We've got no way to leave."

Nightliss rubbed my arm. "I won't be able to hold open the scar long enough for everyone to go through, but maybe it's for the best."

"No." My lips felt rubbery and my vision blurred. "No one left behind." I tried to collect my wits, but my brain wanted no part of it.

"We have to rest." I could barely keep my eyes open. "We need rest."

Shelton's forehead pinched. "How the hell are we supposed to survive without Elyssa's help?"

I felt almost drunk from exhaustion. And that was when I realized something awful. "Tentacles are poisoned."

Shelton's panicked face was the last thing I saw before the darkness took me.
