Chapter Eleven

“Harry, we have to call Parker,” Bob said as I drove the Range Rover out onto Amnicola, turned right, and hit the gas. “This is simply too big for us to handle.” Jeez, was he agitated! “We now know for sure that they have a bomb, and…”

“There’s no time, Bob!”

“No time? No friggin’ time? What the hell are you thinking? There’re only three of us. How the hell are we going to find them in that hell hole? We need help. And what the hell are we going to do with the damn bomb if we find it?”

“I’ve been thinking about that. I think I might have a plan…”

“You might have a plan? Are you friggin’ crazy? This ain’t a damn movie. Who the hell d’you think you are, Tom Cruise? You can’t try to defuse it. You’ll blow us all to hell. Get real, for God’s sake…” Bob paused to think, then said, “I’m calling Parker, and Kate, and Whitey; and you can go to hell, Harry Starke.”

I grinned at him as I said, “Good luck with that. How long d’you think it will take for them to get their shit together, let alone… Ah, go ahead. What can it hurt?”

I almost laughed out loud when I heard Parker’s voice mail, “Leave a message. I’ll get back to you.”

“Parker, you need to call me… or Harry. It’s urgent.”

He called the sheriff’s department and asked for Jordan White, but then soon hung up, shaking his head.

“Why’d you hang up?” I asked him.

He shook his head again. “He’s in Knoxville, at a convention. How could he do that, leave town knowing what he knows?”

“You could have asked for Crabtree,” I said. Jason Crabtree was Jordan’s chief deputy.

I slowed as we passed by the PD on Amnicola, then hit the gas again, heading for Highway 153.

“Call Kate,” I said. “You have her cell number.”

He did, but we must have passed her unnoticed, because when she answered, she told him she’d just entered the marshalling yards and had already spotted Shady walking toward the road.

I reached over and grabbed the phone out of his hand.

“Kate,” I said, “you need to listen to me and don’t interrupt.”

By the time I finished explaining what was going on, I was already on Highway 153 and heading for Highway 58. She kept quiet the whole time, but when I did finally finish, she let fly.

She called me every name she could think of, told me to hold off and let her people handle it, swore at me, called me more names, and then quieted down and asked for directions. I gave them to her as best I could, but I knew even then that we were on our own, at least for a while. Hell, I didn’t know where we were going, much less was I able to direct her to the location. In the end, I told her I’d wait until SWAT arrived. Yeah, I knew I was lying, but it couldn’t be helped. I had to get her off the phone.
