Chapter Eleven
âHarry, we have to call Parker,â Bob said as I drove the Range Rover out onto Amnicola, turned right, and hit the gas. âThis is simply too big for us to handle.â Jeez, was he agitated! âWe now know for sure that they have a bomb, andâ¦â
âThereâs no time, Bob!â
âNo time? No frigginâ time? What the hell are you thinking? Thereâre only three of us. How the hell are we going to find them in that hell hole? We need help. And what the hell are we going to do with the damn bomb if we find it?â
âIâve been thinking about that. I think I might have a planâ¦â
âYou might have a plan? Are you frigginâ crazy? This ainât a damn movie. Who the hell dâyou think you are, Tom Cruise? You canât try to defuse it. Youâll blow us all to hell. Get real, for Godâs sakeâ¦â Bob paused to think, then said, âIâm calling Parker, and Kate, and Whitey; and you can go to hell, Harry Starke.â
I grinned at him as I said, âGood luck with that. How long dâyou think it will take for them to get their shit together, let alone⦠Ah, go ahead. What can it hurt?â
I almost laughed out loud when I heard Parkerâs voice mail, âLeave a message. Iâll get back to you.â
âParker, you need to call me⦠or Harry. Itâs urgent.â
He called the sheriffâs department and asked for Jordan White, but then soon hung up, shaking his head.
âWhyâd you hang up?â I asked him.
He shook his head again. âHeâs in Knoxville, at a convention. How could he do that, leave town knowing what he knows?â
âYou could have asked for Crabtree,â I said. Jason Crabtree was Jordanâs chief deputy.
I slowed as we passed by the PD on Amnicola, then hit the gas again, heading for Highway 153.
âCall Kate,â I said. âYou have her cell number.â
He did, but we must have passed her unnoticed, because when she answered, she told him sheâd just entered the marshalling yards and had already spotted Shady walking toward the road.
I reached over and grabbed the phone out of his hand.
âKate,â I said, âyou need to listen to me and donât interrupt.â
By the time I finished explaining what was going on, I was already on Highway 153 and heading for Highway 58. She kept quiet the whole time, but when I did finally finish, she let fly.
She called me every name she could think of, told me to hold off and let her people handle it, swore at me, called me more names, and then quieted down and asked for directions. I gave them to her as best I could, but I knew even then that we were on our own, at least for a while. Hell, I didnât know where we were going, much less was I able to direct her to the location. In the end, I told her Iâd wait until SWAT arrived. Yeah, I knew I was lying, but it couldnât be helped. I had to get her off the phone.
