CHAPTER 7
I FEEL LIKE A HOBBIT
The sun was passing the midpoint in the sky, radiating a gentle heat that warmed the soul after the cold winter. They made good time getting to the last city between them and the sprawling urban complex of the exterior cities of the capital. Fredericksburg was fairly large in contrast to the other towns they had passed on their journey. The highway went right along the western outskirts of the city, and to Hunterâs surprise they were able to drive through it.
They had to keep the vehicle mostly off road along the sides of the highway, which was littered with abandoned vehicles. The southbound lanes were much worse off than the northbound ones. Nearly bumper to bumper traffic of all kinds of vehicles imaginable almost completely blocked any access around the area. The northbound lanes wouldnât have been so bad, except that a lot of the opposing traffic hopped the medians where possible and started to clog both sides. They were also surprised at the level of activity flowing south, away from their intended direction. Multiple families and other groups of survivors were still trying to navigate the southbound lanes in an attempt to get as far away as possible from Virginiaâs northern border.
They stopped to talk to a few people, getting advice and intelligence on the road ahead. One group told them the most useful bit of information of the day: âYou might be able to drive up to the Rappahannock Falls Bridge, but you wonât be able to cross it by vehicle.â An older gentleman had warned them that the bridge was completely gridlocked; it was the most significant choke point in the area, north- or southbound. Hunter asked a few separate groups about the undead in the area. The main answer was stay out of the streets of Fredericksburg; across the bridge was their territory now. He didnât like the sound of that. He figured the bridge and wide, rough rapids of the river were a natural barrier, keeping the tangos mostly on the northern side. After slowing to a crawl, they made it to the impassable bridge.
âWell, at least the bridge is still intact,â Marcus said, thinking of the bridge that had been destroyed. This one was hundreds of feet above the water. The river had carved out a natural valley and made a steep climb on either side. The rush of the multiple Class 2 and 3 rapids below filled the open air and beautiful afternoon with the relaxing noise of flowing water. If it wasnât for all the abandoned vehicles, this would be a beautiful place, Hunter thought. They drove to the entrance of the bridge and got out.
Chloe walked to the edge of the raised highway and peered over. âItâs beautiful.â A sense of peace came over her. Bishop joined her and quietly took in the serenity of the scene. Marcus took out the map and used some random objects to pin the corners down on the hood. Hunter came to his side, and the two began to inspect it.
