Chapter six

CHAPTER 6

The morning after, Lola's head was still fuzzy from a hangover and lost in her experience with the detective as she habitually got dressed for work. She had gone down from her house to the store to open it and had forgotten the key to the front door. She went back up the winding staircase, feeling a little woozy, grabbed the keys from the basket on the weathered oak table stand next to the front door, went back down to open it, and realized she had forgotten her phone. If a hangover is going to cause me to work out this much, I should go to the bar more often.

When she went down for the third time, she could only laugh when she realized she had forgotten the sweater she was crocheting for Jax. She felt completely scatterbrained and was grateful that she was alone in the shop that day and not responsible for directing anyone else. She craved a little solitude after last night. There wouldn't be much to do at the antique store that morning besides attending to customers; there were no new products to analyze, nor any maintenance work to do.

Lola opened the door to the store and flipped the sign from CLOSED to OPEN. She took a minute to appreciate the morning ocean breeze, truly feeling like home again. That day, the sun seemed to want to shine brighter than usual. Lola was really in a good mood, and even spilling the coffee she had brought from the back office didn't change the happiness that last night had brought.

Setting her coffee down, steam rising lazily into the streams of gold from the rising sun piercing through the windows, she sat to crochet a little. Customers didn't usually arrive so early, so she would have some peace and quiet for a while. Even though Lola does adore Charles and Jax, they can be very noisy in the morning. Jade is still off on her morning excursions, the silly cat. She had adjusted to island life quickly - she hated the city. That left Lola to enjoy a bit of solitude.

She had just gotten into the rhythm of her stitching when an all too familiar chime followed by footsteps interrupted her bliss.

It was Marco.

"Hello, Miss Lola. Busy this morning?" Marco's voice was low, almost gruff and gravely like he’d been in a yelling match for hours on end.

Lola looked up from the sweater and scrutinized him with tired eyes. After a few moments of uncomfortable silence, she finally spoke. "Hi, Detective. Not exactly, what can I do for you? We don’t serve alcohol here," she snickered playfully…even with a dull throbbing headache to remind her why she doesn’t drink often.

"Well, actually I wanted to invite you for a walk around the city with me. There's a travel agency that offers guided tours and I thought it would be a good idea." He looked away, lowering his sunglasses, squinting as he took in the rest of the empty shop and hoping his offer wouldn't be seen as too intrusive.
