He blinked the blue box away, waiting for the frail woman’s response. She was giving his words due consideration, looking thoughtfully around the room.

After a moment, she gestured to the weapons on the walls. “Those belonged to my family. They’re a reminder of what I have lost, and of my responsibilities.” She pointed to the bow. “Silca died to a [Disintegrate] from Archmage Dennar of Giantsrest.” Then she pointed at the swords. “Calah died to a trap in an Edrani Empire gatehouse dungeon we were clearing to make a shorter path to the village of Tarren.”

She pointed at her own spear, still propped in the holder next to the desk. “I can make Gemore’s Adventurers capable of clearing dungeons without casualties. Capable of winning fights against Giantsrest. Both are necessary. But I won’t dedicate this city to Giantsrest’s destruction. The majority of Gemore would not survive that fight, no matter how it went.”

She pointed to Nathan last of all. “You have an aspiration to destroy Giantsrest, and I sympathize. By the Endings, do I sympathize. But, you also want to help Gemore against the dangers that assail us. Help us with our ongoing survival, and when you decide the time is right, I will help you with your goal.”

She paused, tapping a finger to her glass as she considered something. “I will swear you an Oath, upon my title as Guildmistress and member of the Council of Gemore. May Davrar revoke my class if I forswear. Stay in Gemore for now, maybe until your next class Development. Help us, and work with the Heirs to ensure their safety and the safety of Gemore. Do this, and I will give you aid in your fight against Giantsrest. I will introduce you to somebody who shares your goal. Somebody powerful, with multiple classes, who wishes the destruction of Giantsrest over all else. The Heirs are unlikely to follow you to Giantsrest. This is their home, and those who make war on Giantsrest court a fate worse than death. You need allies when you decide to move against them, and I will bring you to their attention.”

Nathan picked up the glass, then offered another toast to Sudraiel. She clinked his glass, and they downed the rest of the liquor.

His voice still had an edge of raggedness to it as he replied. “It’s a deal.”

There was a long minute of silence, as they sat there and considered what had passed. Then there was a faint knock on the door.

Sudraiel sighed and stood, collecting both glasses. “It seems the work must always continue. Do you have any final questions?”

Nathan was about to shake his head when he remembered one more thing. “I meant to try to build a weapon. From home, the sort of thing that Taeol wanted. Nothing catastrophic – just a personal weapon.
