Chapter Twelve: Yankee Lesson

“Seems you have some devoted subjects, my boy,” Sheldyn remarked in private. Preparations were already underway to leave: Yankee was being sent home on account of the holiday—Sheldyn had granted two weeks of leave for everyone.

“They’re all grand people, my Lord. I’ve been very fortunate.”

“Leah is quite charming; the whole family seems close to your heart.”

“Yes, my Lord, they are. Speaking of which, the Brett boys have no family except Yankees ... I, uh, can’t leave them here, sir,” Cody said.

“You’d invite them to Blackthorne, then?”

“I would, my Lord.”

“Our company might frighten them or bore them to tears,” laughed Sheldyn. “Of course, your father won’t like it, but I think it’s just grand. Will you ask Mistress Heatherton? You’ll be bringing Master Vance, no doubt, as well.”

“Jamie’s Da’s out to sea, but his Mum ... I’ll have to ask before I can speak for him, sir. Will Da actually be there?” Cody asked doubtfully.

“I have commanded him to be present; another world war would not force him to defy me.” Cody just nodded. “You still didn’t answer me about the young maiden.”

“It wouldn’t be proper to ask her. Her family will be handling the farm property, sir.”

“Oh, I see.” Cody looked puzzled, but Sheldyn just continued. “All in good time, my boy.”

“Besides, Da isn’t over fond of guests – of people he doesn’t well know.”

“True enough. Perhaps, another time? At any rate, you’ve done well. The people love your fairness and graciousness. You gave presents to all with your spending money?” Cody just nodded. Even though he almost felt foolish, he had no regrets.

“Few of our noble brethren can live up to your ideals, I’m afraid. They will be forced to respect your opinions and obey you, but I fear some may not love you for it.”

“I just try to do what’s right, my Lord. Like I’ve been taught. Men like Kalleck and O’Doyle, I just don’t understand. We’re all one people, and yet, there’s so much...”

“Evil and petty stupidities? Inane rivalries?” prompted Lord Sheldyn.

“Yessir. Why do you, I mean—why do we allow them in such positions when they continue to do wrong?”

“Not a man is perfect, my boy, and we Elves are their progeny. You’re a servant of the people first, as should be. They’ve forgotten that one of noble rank must be of noble bearing—to serve, protect, sheppard, and care for those entrusted to them.

“Your father and I promised your dear mother that you would constantly be reminded of this golden rule. I’m afraid it will be your role to set the example and correct the wayward.”

“Me? I’m only a boy. O’Doyle just laughed at me. I don’t have your authority or your power, my Lord.”

“Ah, but you do! And something more, besides. Ideals, a loving heart, and loyal followers are greater than any power of the Crown, son.

“Do you have to force Daven to do anything with your power? Or your bosom friend, Jamian?”

“No, my Lord. But—”

“Did you use your ‘power’ to force your
