To ensure they arrived before Sunrise and the demon, Determination White took the most direct route to the Nyupusau Caves. Their route avoided most of the scenery and wildlife of Dasautu skyland, as well as its ill-maintained paths and difficult terrain. They arrived at the Nyupusau Caves a full week before Raven and Sunrise had expected her to arrive.

The Nyupusau Caves were as isolated as Raven could have hoped for. Very little else about the situation put him at all at ease. Only one message had arrived in the nearest village, Kuru Nyupusau, before them: one of the local teams, Loyalty Orange, had received Determination White’s request for backup and were on the way.

Before decamping from the vicinity of Kudau Falls entirely, Determination White requisitioned various excavation enchantments from the locals. They had tools designed to turn earth and stone to friable matter easily broken, and other ones for making sections either heavier or lighter. In addition, they had a number of remote triggers: enchantments one could use to delay the effect of another enchantment until the remote was triggered. These were used by miners to clear passages when it might be dangerous to be present when the enchantment was triggered. But they could also be used to collapse a tunnel, too.

They could have recruited a miner in Kudau Falls as well, but then they would have been taking the unlucky conscript even farther from home. Instead, when they reached Kuru Nyupusau, they conscripted a local miner named Aldark. Even Kuru Nyupusau was a two-day trek from the Nyupusau Caves. With the miner at hand, they’d surveyed the caves, and selected some key junctures where they could use their trigger enchantments to reinforce their traps. The idea was that the demon would set off a web-trap and be delayed by it long enough for Determination White to trigger the cave-in that would kill it, with the team’s combat hunters standing by to finish off the demon if necessary. Sunrise, unaffected by the web, could run to safety before the cave-in was triggered. In theory, no one in Determination White intended to drop a mountain on Sunrise. In practice, Raven doubted there would be a clear opportunity to crush the demon without serious risk to its captive hunter. “Moreover,” he pointed out to Aster more than once, “a cave-in is almost certain to kill her, but shall not stop her demon.”

“Even if it survives, it’s bound to be weakened,” Aster answered. “And we shall have two teams here to stop it. We shall be fine.”

The miner was the only other person who didn’t like the plan, for entirely different reasons. The Nyupusau Caves were a sacred place to some of the locals, who thought them blessed by the angels.

“So are sigils,” Tangerine said, revealing theirs. “We’re doing the angels’ work. Stopping demons.”

Like Raven, their conscripted miner went along with Determination White’s plan, misgivings or not.

Even when Loyalty Orange arrived, Raven found no one who would give more than lip service to his cautions.
