JORDAN SHIVERED ON the bench of the rickety, pitch-black cargo truck on the way to the plane that would take him, the two-man crew, and whatever they were carrying to Maryland at around midnight on Sunday. On a commercial jet, a flight from most parts of Afghanistan would take about seven or eight hours. The tiny plane, however, would need to stop twice for fuel, once in Egypt and once in Liberia. So, the importers—as Jordan liked to think of them—had a thirty-hour trip planned once the plane left the ground. But, first, they had to get there. The truck swayed as it ascended the mountain, sending a heavy wooden box across the floor. He used all his strength in an attempt to brace it with his healthy leg, but the box crashed against his injured ankle. Jordan stuffed his fist in his mouth to stifle the scream. The importers would not appreciate a noisy unnamed loader. They knew him only as Adeela’s friend. And that was enough to get him home.

But then again…home to what? Aaron thought he was dead. What if he’d moved on to another man? Jordan shuddered at the thought he had put out of his mind for a month. Of course, Aaron had every right to see other people after Jordan’s death. That didn’t mean Jordan couldn’t hold out hope that he hadn’t fallen for someone else. Jordan coughed into his shirtsleeve, quickly wiping his mouth of the blood. He had to believe that Angel would welcome him home if he was going to push through the next day and a half.

He could not even begin to think of his job at the moment. Jordan had no plans for how he would convince the US government that one of their own had attempted to have him killed. Maybe my captors lied. No. Well, some of them might have, but not Adeela. I hope. No! She hadn’t lied. The people above her had to have given her bad information. That was the only possibility Jordan could live with. Literally. Because if she lied about anything, he’d be killed within hours by the importers, their friends, or a foreign government.

Jordan slammed his head against the truck wall as the brakes screeched to a halt. He tried his best to catch the blood dripping down the back of his skull and neck with one of the clean shirts Adeela had put in his bag.

The steel door cranked open, revealing the driver with his arms crossed, chewing his tobacco. The clouds hung heavy and gray. “Looking for an engraved invitation, boy? Get your ass up and put these boxes in the plane.”

Jordan limped off the truck with the help of his makeshift walking stick. Ten boxes, about a hundred pounds apiece, needed to be transferred. As he stared at them, trying to construct a plan, the driver kicked his stick hard enough to snap it in half.

“I need that!” Jordan cried out and grabbed onto the side of the truck.
