THIRTEEN

There was nothing to do but wait.

With Cole busy investigating which Andy we needed, and Sol trying to learn more about the Wing, it left me at a bit of a loss as to what to do. With no Zel shadowing me and nothing else to do, I decided to deliver Davis’s package to the Market and earn some goodwill.

The recipient was one of the upstairs public shop owners, and it reminded me of how elegant and beautiful the place was during daytime. I sat on one of the second-floor benches, admiring the plants and the clear blue sky. With my room now an angel and summoner pit stop, I might have to make this my new daydreaming spot.

I considered going underground to prod some more now that I had a weapon name, but I didn’t want to stir the pot too much. Plus, Leo might try to drag me into doing another favor for him since I’d never finished the first one.

Asking the Archivist about Hunters named Andy crossed my mind. But that would mean entering her hellhole—no way she’d part with the information over the phone—and possibly paying a lot more than the name was worth. Another last resort scenario.

It wouldn’t surprise me if she knew where the Hunters’ dangerous items collection was, but I shuddered at the price of that kind of information, especially if she guessed I was in a hurry.

Missing a claw or an eye would definitely put me at a disadvantage going forward.

After about an hour of losing myself in a wide variety of what-ifs, I decided to do my waiting at home.

New undernet searches offered no extra information on Cabot or the Wing. Following a random impulse, I searched for Zel. Again. Nothing new there, either. A vague description that could’ve fit just about anything with wings, and mentions of his love for weaponry. Alaciel had a much more impressive list of search results, having been involved in the great battle against Dralzar, he who almost conquered all realms and got quartered and strewn around in return.

Other than that, there wasn’t much known about him, especially after he’d been trapped by Ward.

Seeing the list of battles Alaciel had supposedly won in ancient times put Ward’s power into perspective. That a mere human—a young one at that—had had the cunning and power to trap such an impressive angel was hard to comprehend. If he wanted, he could lay waste to the world.

This was where the Hunters’ unofficial lax policy on summoners came into play. As long as Ward didn’t decide to go on a killing spree, the Hunters weren’t going to risk him unleashing Alaciel’s full power and putting innocents at risk by going after him. A see-no-evil, hear-no-evil kind of Faustian deal.

The problem was, this approach made the Hunters more willing to let the summoners’ plans slide by, content in their knowledge that if nothing bad had happened by now, nothing was going to happen in the future.

Huge mistake. And Ramón was too obstinate to see it.
