Cynthia was laughing almost hysterically.

“I… I just can’t…”

She tries to compose herself.

“Oh my word… you know, I really shouldn’t be surprised anymore, but I just can’t help it. Wow, well done girls, that honestly has to be the most spectacular thing I have ever seen. Come on, time to get out of here.”

She interacts with the panel and Angelfyre’s flight deck reappears. Dr Marcus was waiting for them.

“It actually worked… I will be damned. I cannot believe we managed to transform you two into warriors in such short space of time. I honestly thought this plan had no chance.”

Cynthia walks over to him.

“They were incredible, Joe. The AIs gave them a good challenge, but they used their heads and wits and absolutely dominated them. There’s not much more we can do. They’re as ready as they will ever be.”

“Well, I am a lot more confident in your chances of success now.”

Cynthia pulls up a holopanel with a large, colourful technical illustration of Casey’s brain, filled with millions of thin lines, all flowing and pulsating with a myriad of different colours.

“Joe, come and look at this!”

Dr Marcus peers at the holopanel in astonishment.

“Absolutely incredible! It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen.”

He points to it, turning to Angel and Casey.

“If you could, I would like to observe the separation.”

The two girls close their eyes. Several of the flowing lines start to flicker, then, one by one, dull and slowly fade away. They eventually open their eyes, both speaking at almost the same time, slightly out of sync.

“It feels a bit weird this time. Probably because we were together…”

“…for a lot longer…” says Angel, followed shortly by Casey.

“…than we’ve been before.”

Dr Marcus nods.

“Yes, to be expected. The neural buffer slowly loses sync as you disconnect from it. But it is imperative that you get used to it, especially if you are to merge and separate in a compromising situation. You need your senses about you if you’re in the middle of a fight.”

“I think we’re…”

“…getting better at it. Takes a while to…”

“…separate properly but we are fully…”

“…aware of ourselves and what is going…”

“…on.”

Dr Marcus points at the holopanel.

“Just seeing this analysis makes me confident you will eventually reach a point where you can merge and separate instantly. Either way, this is absolutely outstanding. I would have never believed such a thing to ever be possible.”

He whispers something into Cynthia’s ear before turning to Casey.

“So Casey, do you think you’ll be able to do all those fancy moves when you are not merged with Angel?”

“Um… well, I don’t know, reall...”

Cynthia suddenly advances on her. Without so much as a thought, Casey effortlessly blocks her kicks and punches, staring at her hands in surprise.

“What?! But…. How?”

“Would you look at that. Your motor neuron reflexes have conditioned themselves from the SI tactical defence integration. I suspect it was because you and Angel were fused for so long.”

Dr Marcus regards the two carefully.

“This is certainly encouraging, but now it’s time to do some final preparations.
