He'd told Benji he was fine, but he could tell from her occasional glances that she didn't believe him. That was unfortunate because John was all out of placating responses. If Benji asked again he just might tell her the truth.
He'd been staring at the captain's closed office door pretty much all afternoon, waiting for the moment when it opened and his name was called. John was surprised it hadn't happened already. Surely one of the diners last night had complained to the restaurant manager. And since it was John's favorite restaurant they knew him there. They knew he was a cop. He doubted they'd let him back. Not that he would be able to show his face to any of the employees there again anyway.
And what about Emma? She had the biggest mouth of anyone John knew. There was no way she would keep quiet about this. No way.
He glanced again at the captain's door and it was still closed. No complaints about John so far, but there wasn't a time limit on this, was there? Sooner or later, be it hours or days, John was going to hear about the scene at the restaurant.
Suspension was the least of his concerns. His greatest fear was that he was removed from the case. Like he'd told Finn, it wouldn't stop him, but it would make his mission of justice a lot more difficult if he had to do it under the department's radar. He would lose the resources available to him.
It would make him a vigilante.
He picked out the sound of her heels even in the midst of the ruckus that filled the precinct. John's heart stopped beating. He could tell by Benji's raised eyebrows that his face had probably gone white. He hadn't slept all night, picturing Emma's face and replaying her words. He was suddenly afraid to face her.
"John?"
Steeling himself for the worst, the inevitable, John spun his chair around.
Emma had caught the eye of the many males, suspects and cops alike, who flowed past John's desk. She was dressed in all white and there was something different about her that John's detective instincts picked up immediately, but couldn't quite name.
"Emma." He cleared his throat nervously. "I tried calling your room last night. You never answered."
She nodded. "I needed to think."
That was something John didn't want her to do. Not after Finn had dropped his scandalous bombshells.
"That's understandable," he agreed, trying to keep his voice even. "A lot of confusing things happened last night. I need to explain them. Finn—"
Emma held up her hand, waiting patiently for John to close his mouth. "It's alright, John. I know that last night was not what it seemed. I don't believe you were ever involved with Finn that way."
John took an extra minute to digest what she'd said, certain he must have heard right. "You don't?"
"I don't."
"But the things you said. The way you ran out—"
Emma smiled ruefully. "I was a little hysterical. I overreacted. I'm embarrassed about that."
Emma was being self-deprecating.
