Chapter 13
Apart
Phoenix drove Dags back to his place sometime after noon.
She had to go in to one of the studios, since Phoenix had yet another movie in production, and they were beginning primary shooting the following week.
They didnât take the bike that time.
Instead, she drove her beachier car, the Toyota Land Cruiser, offering to drop him off on her way to the studio. Heâd already informed her theyâd be taking his Mustang that night, when they went to Uriâs. His car had a better engine, and while it was unlikely to make much difference with an angelic being that flew, Dags wanted to drive his car anyway.
Besides, heâd wanted to go check on Carla, and David, her husband.
He also wanted to look at his options for weapons.
Despite all of these things, despite the sheer practicality of them splitting up for a few hours while Phoenix went to work and Dags took care of things before they went to Uriâs that afternoon, Dags struggled to leave her car when she pulled into the small driveway on the lower part of his property. He stared at the garden wrapped around his giant studio built into the hill, thinking of ways to do this without actually letting her go anywhere alone.
In the end, he looked at her.
She smiled back.
When he didnât move, she reached for him.
Gripping his hair in her hand, the engine of the Toyota still rumbling under them, she leaned over from the driverâs side of the long bench and kissed him, using her tongue.
He kissed her back.
At some point, he slid over the bench.
He got close enough that both of them were half-against the steering wheel, and he had his hand wrapped around her crotch in the tight jeans she wore, even as he kissed her throat. She let out a gasping moan as he lifted his head, kissing her mouth again.
He had no idea how long they were doing that.
In the end, Steve McQueen whined, lifting his head for the first time from the back seat of the Land Cruiser, where heâd been curled up, dead asleep.
Hearing him, Phoenix pushed lightly on Dagsâ chest, gasping a little.
She turned her head then, noting the time on the old-fashioned dashboard.
âIâm officially past fashionably late,â she informed him easily. âIâm now venturing into the edges of diva-esque late. Which I donât normally do.â Biting her lip, she met his gaze, her expression reluctant. âI have to go. Theyâre going to think something happened. After Jamie, everyoneâs on edge.â
She was flushed, still breathing hard, but he felt a flicker of embarrassment on her now.
âSorry,â he said, feeling his own embarrassment surface.
âSorry?â She snorted. âFor what? I started it.â
Leaning back with an effort, he held up his hands, even as Steve McQueen whined again, now looking out the window at the garden filled with birds.
Dags shrugged, still feeling embarrassed.
âI havenât exactly been⦠self-control guy lately.â
She laughed at that, half-incredulous. âYou, huh? Only you? How interesting.â
At his quirked eyebrow, she smiled, shaking her head.
âWeâll have
