I adopted Lucy from the animal shelter where I volunteer, hoping that she would be good company for my mother. Mom had been spending a lot of time alone since my father died. Lucy is a big, high-energy gray cat — possibly a Maine coon mix. She turned out to be a one-person cat, and a lot of fun. Lucy became both an angel and an entertainer for my mother.

My mother kept six cellophane-wrapped peppermint candies in an attractive ruby-colored dish on the coffee table in her living room. Soon the peppermints became Lucy’s favorite toy.
