CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX
The officers took several cars from their headquarters to the Warsaw ghetto. Rolf rode along with an old friend, Wolfgang Muehler.
Wolfgang and Rolf were chatting as they entered the iron gate to the Warsaw ghetto. Rolf happened to look up and noticed that small, diamond-like chunks of ice had formed on the barbed wire that surrounded the entire Jewish prison.
He and Wolfgang were discussing a local beer hall where they had attended a meeting a few nights prior. The beer had been flowing and the food was outstanding, all courtesy of the Reich. Wolfgang, who was still single, teased Rolf a little about tying the knot and Rolf laughed.
âYou know that you canât wait to get married, Wolf. If nothing else it is a good mark on your name with the Party and can certainly help further your career.â
âYes, of course. I know you are right. I just have to find the right girl. I like to change them so often.â
Rolf laughed. âYou can still have others on the side. I didnât say you had to be faithful. Just married.â
âIs that your plan, Rolf?â Wolfgang winked.
âOf course. I will have plenty of babies with my wife. And fun on the side.â
They were about halfway inside the prison walls when a loud blast made Rolf jump. Rolf had heard gunshots before, but he wasnât expecting them. Again, more gunshots, even louder, rang through the ghetto. He froze on the pavement. The bullets were coming from somewhere overhead. Rolf looked up but could not determine where the shots were originating. Several Germans dropped to their unexpected deaths.
Rolf turned to look at his friend, Wolfgang, who had fallen silently to the ground with blood pouring out of his chest. At first, Rolf was so stunned he couldnât believe what was happening. He felt like he was dreaming. The nightmare had an unrealistic quality about it. Still, the gunfire continued. The bullets were coming from all directions and the Nazis could not determine where to run or where to find the perpetrators and stop them. Bullets rained down from an apartment in a building on one side of the road. The Germans ran up the stairs to the room where the shots had come from only to find it empty. Confused, they walked back outside where more gunfire attacked them from a completely different location. Bullets flew from so many directions that it was impossible to find the snipers as Nazis dropped like shattered rag dolls. The snow was stained crimson with their blood.
Rolf would never let on, but he was terrified. Jews were not expected to fight back like that. They never had. It was a terrible and unexpected surprise. The worst of it was that, no matter how hard he tried to find the shooters, he could not see his enemy. However, he knew that as long as he was wearing his Nazi uniform he was a target. Stunned and unable to fight back, Rolf ran as fast as he could out of the Warsaw Ghetto.
