people and the vilification of him by others exposed to the same information?
Years ago I was the writer of a one-hour documentary about Frank Sinatra. Several of us went to his home in Palm Springs to film and for two days saw quite a bit of him. Exposed to his charm firsthand, it was easy to understand his popularity.
When Walter Cronkite interviewed Sinatra for the report, he asked some hard questions about incidents in his past. He asked about mob associations, women and attacks Sinatra was reported to have made on newsmen or photographers. Sinatra was angry in response. He went point by point down a long list of things that had been said about him. He claimed, in quite a convincing way, that every one of those stories was untrue.
I always believed him. I suspected that the events had not taken place precisely as the public had been led to believe they had; but I also came away with an even stronger conviction about the journalistic process.
The public has a more accurate idea of what Frank Sinatra is really like than Frank Sinatra has of himself.
I think the public also knows almost exactly what Ronald Reagan is like. Under the same circumstances, that's the sort of thing that would make any one of us nervous and irritable.
Reagan's Gray Hair
c
LOSE observers reported that Reagan's thick black hair showed definite patches of gray during his \'est Coast vacation." That's how a paragraph read in the U.S. News afid World Report.
Shame on you, U.S. News and World Report. You're a good magazine with an important-sounding name and you ought not to dabble in drivel. What's going on in California, Poland, Afghanistan? That's what we sent you out to report back on, not the color of the President's hair.
President Reagan is seventy-one years old, he's got one of the hardest, most important jobs in the world, and he's got all that brush to clean out at the ranch. Of course he's getting gray.
What about George Washington, U.S. News? I don't see you
